File upload bot talk page
There is a message on the file upload bot talk page pressing people not to use it because you don't check it. Unfortunately bots can't read that message and still try to use it. A licence template added by that bot is now deprecated and bots are now telling your file upload bot that if nothing is done about it the file gets deleted. In most of the cases the fix needed is trivial and your bot is the only entity that gets warned. I'm just an anon who happened to notice this and who will be gone in a second, but I just thought you might like to know so you can take the proper course of action. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.139.87.196 (talk • contribs) 06:30, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Wiki2XML extension
Hello, I have been making use of your wiki2xml.php extension at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Wiki2xml
I have been using it for a project hosted on Drupal: http://drupal.org/sandbox/TommyKaneko/1090360
I would like to relicense the file wiki2xml.php under the GPL v2 license, and begin to maintain it independently on Drupal.org. I believe that the code will actually fork away from its current intended use.
May I have your permission to do this?
Many thanks, Tom Kaneko
[EDIT] -permission granted. Thank you.

Transfer files erroring
Hi Magnus Manske: I'm sorry I don't understand if this is a bug report or just some kind of small problem, but files transferring from Wiki are erroring like File:Beckton - Henry Addlington Close.jpg this one, and others of recent uploads. They don't seem to have an upload template at all! If I have put this note in the wrong place, please direct me to the correct one but in the interest of not gaining a few thousand more images for the backlog, please figure out what is going wrong? Thank you so much. Ellin Beltz (talk) 15:55, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Missing first Upload on Pictures from Wikipedia transferred to Commons
For Exemple this Picture: File:Ellok371002CD.jpg
First Upload was before I have it downloaded, before 2008-04-10 00:09.
Users Date is not secure, first Upload is very important.

De-adminship
Dear Magnus,
it is with a regret that I inform you that, following our de-adminship policy, you had your administrator rights on Wikimedia Commons removed today by a Wikimedia steward.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank you for your efforts and contributions in making Wikimedia Commons what it is today (no big words intended!). If you'll feel like doing so at some point, please feel free to re-apply for adminship at COM:RFA. Again, thanks for all the help you gave us, and (hopefully) see you back soon! odder (talk) 20:49, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

In the past, we used to count such edits an admin actions, even though they are not logged in any logs, and not visible in the inactivity tool that we are using. @Magnus, please accept my apologies for putting you in this situation — if you'd like to get your admin bit back, please say the word. My picture on my page ListFiles
hello, My picture https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rorqual.JPG was imported by your bot and it is not on my import page on wikicommons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Jfcapdet&ilshowall=1
How can I list this image in my imported list files? I think is because the user is : 'File Upload Bot Magnus Manske' and not 'Jfcapdet' : how to change it? and is it possible ?
(Sorry if my english is ugly, I'm french)
- Hi, yes, that is because someone used my bot to transfer the image to Commons. There is no easy way to change that; if you have a higher resolution version of the image, you can re-upload it under the same name. However, Commons is slowly moving to a "real" database to track authorship. This will take all of 2014 and most of 2015; however, after that, all your files should list automatically, without you having to do anything. --Magnus Manske (talk) 23:06, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
- ok, thanks , no problem, I shall wait two years. I'm in no hurry.

JIRA system seems down And 403 Error with commonsapi
Hi Magnus, I would like to report a problem with commonsapi but the JIRA system seems down.
Here the thing:
Since yesterday my daily script has an 403 http Error (Forbidden) with https://tools.wmflabs.org/magnus-toolserver/commonsapi.php . This is the update script of Crotos, a mashup of Wikidata & WikiCommons about visual artworks. This API is very usefull to find quiclky width and height of WikiCommons images newly inserted in Wikidata. I can use another way, but if you have any idea about this issue, I would thank you a lot for it. Shonagon (talk) 17:50, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
- TUSC is generating a 403 as well, which means my bot is currently not operable. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:57, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
- Nevermind on my part; it was due to Wikimedia throwing up a firewall to ignore my request without a user agent. @Shonagon: you might be having the same problem. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:01, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
- Yes Magog the Ogre! Thanks. It was the issue and it's fixed now. And Thanks Magnus Manske for this great tool. Shonagon (talk) 20:55, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
Ihre Karte "DeutschsprachigesEuropa.png"
Hallo Herr Manske,

Request for a former toolserver tool
Hallo Magnus,
I don't mean to bother you I just would like to know if you plan on migrating
https://toolserver.org/~magnus/cgi-bin/duplicate_images_across.pl
It would be nice to have it. Also multichill had a I believe similar tool, but I don't know if he is going to migrate it. But if he is maybe one tool would be sufficiant.
https://toolserver.org/~multichill/nowcommons.php
Second there was this tool from jason to find orphan files locally:
https://toolserver.org/~jason/Verwaiste_Bilder.php
You have a similar tool for commons
http://tools.wmflabs.org/magnustools/unused_files.php
so I was wandering if this could be adapted easily.
Thank you very much --Nachcommonsverschieber (talk) 15:00, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Authorizing OAuth for CommonsHelper
Sorry I do not know how this JIRA system works, but I just wanted to ask if you have an idea what I should check or do in order not to get the error message mwoauthdatastore-request-token-not-found I mentioned on the Village pump in French (I start following your talk page in case you answer here.) Oliv0 (talk) 08:35, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
- I also got this error a few days ago while using another tool. After repeating the authorisation process and reloading the page the problem was solved. Maybe this is also helpful for you, otherwise you really need help from Magnus or someone else who knows more about OAuth. --Didym (talk) 19:28, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
- Didym: thank you but I tried again and got the same message. I suppose it cannot be because of the TUSC token I once put on my talk page, TUSC is something different? Who would you think knows more about OAuth? Oliv0 (talk) 08:03, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
-
- Now no more message mwoauthdatastore-request-token-not-found, but what http://tools.wmflabs.org/magnustools/oauth_uploader.php?action=authorize does is that in the popup "Bonjour Oliv0, / OAuth Uploader souhaiterait faire les actions suivantes en votre nom sur tous les projets de ce site : ..." I push the green button "Autoriser" and the result is: "OAuth file uploader / This tool facilitates file uploads to Wikimedia Commons, under jour user name. You will have to authorise it first." = back to the same link http://tools.wmflabs.org/magnustools/oauth_uploader.php?action=authorize. Oliv0 (talk) 05:35, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

When I try to OAuth, I get differing errors, such as "Error retrieving token: mwoauthdatastore-bad-token", "<mwoauthdatastore-callback-not-found>", etc. I also eventually get through to f2c but it won't upload saying I need to authorise. Why is there no mention of the original source of a file expropriated from English-Wikipedia, [2]? My name is not even mentioned, nor is English Wikipedia... Proposal of deletion with replacement
Hi, last days I have seen the work of the bot CommonsDelinquent, similar to CommonsDelinker, and I wanted to propose you the same thing that I proposed to that bot.
The bot CommonsDelinker makes a great work, but I think that there is a problem with it: when the bot remove the file from an article it don't replace it with another similar. In wikis with a small number of contributors (I come from Galician wiki) that is a problem because we are loosing lots of images! I wanted to propose that the place to delete a file include an optional parameter to add the name of a image to substitute the deleted file to another similar, when possible. I think that it's an important feature. Sorry if it's yet implemented, I don't know all the features of the bot. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 17:12, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Universal replace failed?
CommonsDelinker: Replace File:Doña Isabel Cobos de Porc by Francisco Goya.jpg with File:Portrait of Doña Isabel de Porcel by Francisco Goya.jpg across all Wikimedia projects. Reason: File renamed: I can't find evidence for "Cobos", and the sources indicate Porcel, not Porc. |

Removal of files in gallery by CommonsDelinker
Hello,
When there is a file in a gallery, the new version of CommonsDelinker leaves the description of the deleted image, which is not very useful:
- old version: fr:Special:Diff/110307377
- new version: fr:Special:Diff/112762481
Could it delete the entire line as before? (or everything up to the </gallery> tag if there is one)
Thanks,

Flickr2Commons
Hi Magnus, I'm having difficulty getting Flickr2Commons to work. Sometimes it does, but mostly it says the upload failed without saying why. For example, today I tried to upload this image. It's cc-by, so I added the photo ID 16437629289 to the "single Flickr photo ID" box, but I got the red text saying it had failed, and had to do it manually. Can you help me to work out what I'm doing wrong? SlimVirgin (talk) 22:23, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
- resolution too high? (7360×2085 pixels), i have had problem uploading pics with a larger resolution too..I think flickr2commons desperately needs an upgrade..it has just too many bugs..--Stemoc 03:13, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
- That was just one example. Most of the images I tried to upload recently didn't work, but there's no explanation. SlimVirgin (talk) 22:08, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
- Same here. I've had errors with Flickr2Commons too, as posted above. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 19:29, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- I'm curious (SlimVirgin, Stemoc, and Rsrikanth05) -- can you use the "import from Flickr" feature of the Upload Wizard successfully? (Or, perhaps you have to have a relevant permission -- do you have it?) I'm not sure if this uses the same tool or not. Perhaps another option, if you don't hear back from Magnus soon. -Pete F (talk) 00:23, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
- "import from Flickr" option is only available to licence reviewers and admins, it has the potential to be abused and thus no available for all...that said, i use it a lot but sometimes use flickr2commons to transfer image sets (the upload from flick wizard only allows 50 images from a set)..btw, sometime when it fails, its probably either the image you are uploading has issues such as a .png image added as a .jpg on flickr (quite a common problem with images from the koreanet flickr stream) OR you added an extra space in the image name..happened to me quite a few times..btw, sometimes it does upload but may give you a "Time Out" error --Stemoc 00:32, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

Commons Helper
Reposting this message, which I added in February, and got archived in the meantime
Hi Magnus,
I am having trouble using Commons Helper -- I think (?) it is a problem with OAuth. When I authorize the tool, I get this message:
This tool facilitates file uploads to Wikimedia Commons, under jour user name. You will have to authorise it first.
Which (if I click the "authorise" link) seems to put me in an endless loop of authorizing.
If I try to run the tool after authorization, I get this message:
Querying image data ...done. Retrieving image description ...done. ERROR: Warning
...and no upload.
Any suggestions? (For whatever it's worth, I'm trying to transfer files from this category on Wikisource: wikisource:en:Category:Centennial History of Oregon. My next question, if we can get this sorted out, is whether there's a way to transfer images in bulk from a category...these are only the first few of many I would like to transfer. If you're interested, there's relevant discussion at: wikisource:en:User_talk:Hesperian/Archive_15#Can_you_explain.3F)
In the short term, though, I'd be happy just to be able to transfer individual files. -Pete F (talk) 00:07, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
- Update: This seems to be specific to Wikisource (or possibly my permissions on Wikisource, where I do not have any special privileges?); I am able to make transfers from English Wikipedia. I have used CH from Wikisource in the past, but it has been a few months. -Pete F (talk)

Napoleon's toothbrush
You have uploaded on Commons a picture of a toothbrush attributed to "Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte". Indeed, the handle is ornated with a crowned N, which is a personal emblem of the emperor Napoleon Ith. It is however dated 1795, but Napoleon was not Emperor until 1802. So there is a discrepancy here, the origin of which I cannot trace. Can you ? Can you correct it ? Thanks.

Hello Magnus,
I am doing a PHD on Ghana Young Pioneers (among other things) and found your photo by Wieland Koerbel: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1964_Ghana_Young_Pioneers.jpg
Could you indicate me where you found it (in which database/archive center), please? I am very interested in anything related to this youth movement...

Best regards,

Thanks for the bot! But now I'm here
Hello Magnus. Somebody used your bot to put a lot of my photos from Flickr in the Wikimedia servers. The thing is that I've just joined Wikimedia and would like to know if there's a way to re-credit those images so they include my actual user name. The bot used "Eneas de Troya", which is the pseudonym I use in Flickr, but here in Wikimedia Commons I'm using EneasMx. So, is there any way to do that? --EneasMx (talk) 03:00, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi EneasMx! The only way to do that would be to delete the images, and re-import them, which would likely be overkill. I would try adding your user link to the "author" field, after "Eneas de Troya". Don't be surprised if an admin comes along and asks you to verify that you are the same person. And before you ask, no, I don't have a way to do these edits by bot, sorry. --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:30, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
Permission to use a photo or whom the author was
Mr. Magnus Manske~ I am interested in a photo of shell middens that you ave posted and am wondering if I can recieve permission to use the photo or know with whom the author was. The picture is: Shell midden stratigraphy, Cemetery Island, Fadiouth, Sénégal (west Africa) 1982 (3123813092).jpg. I wasn't sure if you or Mr. Andreas Praefcke uploaded the image. I believe the original author was John Atherton 1982. Thanks!
Jackie Dexter
- Dear Jackie, the author of the image is "John Atherton" (Flickr page), as can be deduced by looking at the row that says "Author: John Atherton". However, as the license is CC-BY-SA, you do not need permission from the author; just attribute the image to "John Atherton, CC-BY-SA-2.0", maybe with a link back to Commons or Flickr if possible. --Magnus Manske (talk) 08:46, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

It seems like the "Show only files not linked from Commons" in F2C doesn't work. Images can have red warning triangles for "there is afile with this name already on COmmons", but it is not hidden. Any way it can be programmed to hide those images? Josve05a (talk) 21:29, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

- Actually, even if I upload an image with F2C then load the same feed 5 min later, it doesn't hide those photos uploaded with F2C. What is needed for the tool to hide these images? Seems like something is broken here... 80.217.16.240 19:02, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
- On another note, am I missing something or do all image uploaded appear in the uploader's watchlist? I could not see a place to deselect that, if it even exists, so ended up having to delete hundreds of images from my watchlist manually. It's rather a pain as we can always find them in our upload file list. But a great tool I've started to use for multiple uploads. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 11:49, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker misbehaving again
This wasn't very helpful. Removing red plaintext links from deletion discussions will make the discussions incomprehensible. Same issue as previously reported. —LX (talk, contribs) 07:07, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

File tagging File:Patagonian Express.jpg
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Patagonian Express.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Patagonian Express.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Delete my picture
Hello Magnus,
Please delete my picture tagged with my name. I have given noone the permission to upload my picture online.

Thank you, Lisa — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 188.60.121.31 (talk) 15:38, 07 January 2016 (UTC)
- @188.60.121.31: Lisa, I have tagged it with {{Personality rights}}. Were you asked for a photo release at HBS conference Militarisierte Männlichkeit 2011? You are welcome to discuss it with the uploaders Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and (User:PanchoS (English) or de:Benutzer:PanchoS (German)). — Jeff G. ツ 16:46, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Lisa, and thanks Jeff G. for pinging,
I transferred these images from flickr as part of the photo documentation of the event of Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung. It is still available freely at flickr. If the photographer at Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung took the photo of the participants without your consent, please have Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung remove it from its flickr stream first. I'm then fine with deleting it from Commons as well.
Otherwise I'm against deleting the image from Commons. Though you currently have no Wikipedia article, the image serves documentary purposes, and as the author of several academic publications, you may already or may soon be eligible for a Wikipedia article.
If the photo has been abused by third parties, feel free to ask us for assistance. Best regards, PanchoS (talk) 17:51, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Lisa, and thanks Jeff G. for pinging,
- P.S. I asked some admin to fix the misspelling of your last name, which originated from the image description at the HBS flickr stream. Sorry about that. --PanchoS (talk) 17:56, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- The photo is here too, but directly from Flickr. — Jeff G. ツ 18:07, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

OAuth identity changed suddenly
Hi Magnus, I was using Flickr2Commons when suddenly my image uploads were credited to a different user. File:Basin and Range National Monument (21584370316).jpg was the last one under my account (2016-01-20 18:31 UTC) and the next one, File:Basin and Range National Monument (21599169342).jpg at 18:35 UTC got uploaded under JoshG (talk · contribs) (who is as far as I can tell mostly retired). I did not re-authorize with OAuth in between the two uploads, nor did I dump my cookies at any time. Then for a while, Flickr2Commons was unavailable due to a 502 (Bad Gateway) error. During this time, I restarted my browser (Firefox), re-authorized with OAuth, and resumed uploading. The latest image File:Basin and Range Mt. Irish (22496595685).jpg was uploaded correctly under my account. I don't know if this was a one-time fluke, but you may want to keep an eye on it. Thanks. —howcheng {chat} 22:40, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
- Upstream OAuth issue, should be fixed now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 15:55, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
Picture request: Towards a metric America
Hi - I really like this picture:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication_in_the_United_States#/media/File:Metric-america.gif
It is used for example here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication_in_the_United_States
However the source of this picture is somewhat unclear. Could you please provide a direct link to the source?
If possible I would like to have a high resolution version of the picture. I have a print of it in my office, where tool sizes in fractional inches, and similar idiocy, is a daily annoyance :).
Your help is much appreciated. ¨

- Hi, I have nothing whatsoever to do with that image, except that my bot was used to transfer it to Commons. Sorry. --Magnus Manske (talk) 15:52, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
Removing "from XXXXXX" in author field of Flickr uploads
I have long used your f2c to upload from Flickr, and I have run into an issue with a particular photographer in whereby when files are uploaded using f2c, in the "Author" field the upload also includes where they are from; i.e. Author = Billy Bob from Some Small Town, Germany. The issue I have run into has the photographer hiding their hometown location on Flickr due to a personal privacy issue, but on their files on Commons this information is still evident. Flickr users are able to change their location at any stage, and if they decide to leave Flickr completely (i.e. shut down their account) due to privacy issues (we don't know why people shut down their accounts), then this information is still present here on Commons.
I also have another photographer who has recently moved from one country to another, and having their old country in the author field is erroneous.
I don't see there be any reason that this information needs to be added to uploads here to Commons; it isn't required for attribution or anything, it is somewhat crufty information. Also when an external re-user uses the "use this file" link, this crufty information is present in the code that is given to them to use.
I am suggesting that we remove the location part of the author field from future uploads. Thoughts? 124.148.75.31 03:04, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

CommonsHelper tool question
Greetings Magnus. I just wanted to stop by and tell you that I really like your CommonsHelper tool. It makes uploading images to commons a lot easier than doing it manually. I have noticed however that when it does that, Ogrebot then goes along and has to do some cleanup. I was wondering if there would be anyway to adjust CommonsHelper to reduce or eliminate the amount of followup edits that OgreBot 2 has to do.
A couple suggestions if you don't mind:
- I would recommend that if a file contains no source information, that CommonsHelper would not let the user upload it. I had the problem with File:Jose Calugas.jpg recently.
- When I uploaded File:USMCGenRossDwyer.jpg it included some information that referenced Wikipedia itself. I would suggest maybe not allowing these either. For what its worth, in this case, the file refers to another similar file called File:Dwyer RossT MajGenUSMC.jpg that has the actual reference information. Not sure your tool can do much about this but in general I would think its not ideal to upload images that use WP as a source.
- When I uploaded File:Paul F Straub.jpg Ogrebot then went back and did some cleanup on the file that can be seen here. Maybe the CommonsHelper tool could do some of this when it loads the image?
- If you look at my uploads here you can see some more things that Ogrebot changes.
I its not possible to do these things with the tool or if you don't have the time I certainly understand. I just wanted to mention it because I noticed that Ogrebot is quite a busy bot and it might reduce some of its edits and the discussions that ensue if some of these things were tweaked in how the CommonsHelper tool worked.
Thanks for the time and please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for all the tools you make, they really do help a lot. Reguyla (talk) 01:48, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
- Also, if you want I can add them to your feature request tool you link too above. I just wanted to mention it in case it wasn't possible or needed. They also refer to the toolserver, so they probably don't work. Cheers! Reguyla (talk) 01:50, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
