CommonsHelper issue

There seems to be an issue with handling {{PD-user|User}} tags. They get translated as {{PD-user}} and the original tag in the description field. Ideally they should become {{PD-user-w|en|wikipedia|User}} tags. // Liftarn

I also noticed that the tag {{Bild-PD-nur PD}} was lost when transfering a picture from the German Wikipedia. // Liftarn

Should both be working now. --Magnus Manske 12:40, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Magnus Manske/Archive 2, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net.

Nice to see you finally applied for adminship. I hope it will encourage you to further work with your tools :-)

Deletion requests

Please take a look at Commons:Deletion requests/Sigmund Romberg files as you were the uploader of those files. I have nominated everything in category:Sigmund Romberg for deletion as all the files in there are misnamed. Did I need to put this on deletion requests? Thanks, Graham87 09:23, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

JavaScript tool

Firstly congratulations on getting adminship, you deserve it. Now - I am here for a reason :P - I have come up with an idea for a cool JavaScript tool that you may be interested in making. It will asist with Flickrreviewing and make life much easier. Take a look here. Thanks. :) Lcarsdata 07:59, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Rewrite of CommonsHelper help

Hi Magnus, I did a rewrite of User:Magnus Manske/Commonshelper interface/Help en and added two images. The manual was a bit outdated. Hope you can approve. Is it true that the option Remove existing categories is deprecated? If so, could you remove it, as it may confuse some. Cheers! Siebrand 22:42, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Those pink flowers are a Geranium, not an Iris: Geranium robertianum I think. William Avery 21:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm a biologist, but I don|t know s**t about plant species ;-) Anyway, I think the botanic garden labeled them as Iris (might have been the wrong plate, though). On the other hand, this doesn't really look like this - or does it? --Magnus Manske 21:38, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Whatever it is it's not an Iris. Nor is Image:Hieracium rinoii 2007-06-02 (plant).jpg a picture of a w:Hieracium/de:Habichtskräuter. The other pics you uploaded look plausible. (One of the reasons I originally became interested in botany was because so few of my biology teachers had any clue about it, and so it was easy to make them look stupid.) William Avery 21:59, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Is there a category "uncertain species"? I'll continue uploading the rest (maybe tomorrow), more knowledgable people than me can sort them out later. Thanks anyway, --Magnus Manske 22:03, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I've hacked together a little javascript tool called Flickrfixr. It will appear in the toolbox on the left for image pages that contain the flickrreview template. It consists of three links, "OK" (license is good ATM), "other" (license is good, but different), and "bad" (bad license on flickr). Clicked upon, the latter two will ask for the old commons / current flickr license, respectively. Then, the page will go into edit mode, replacing the existing flickrreview with the new one, showing the diff. I think that was roughly what you guys wanted, right? --Magnus Manske 19:56, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Magnus! Unfortunately I am unable to get this to work. Please advise. Lcarsdata 20:03, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Ignore this, I can. This is perfect. Thanks. Lcarsdata 20:04, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Commonshelper and categories

An idea. If no categories for an image is found. What about automagicaly tag it with {{Uncat}}? // Liftarn

Done. --Magnus Manske 20:14, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Great. Thanks. // Liftarn

Change requests to ~magnus/commons_dupes.php

copy of message on en.wp user page
Hi Magnus, please change the following things in ~magnus/commons_dupes.php:

  • button name: Orgullobot-replace with other image -> universal replace with other image
  • page on commons to put the commands: User:CommonsDelinker/commands

Thanks. Siebrand 14:49, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

There is now also an optional replace parameter to the {{Universal replace}} template. See User:CommonsDelinker/commands. Is it possible to have that auto filled in with something sensible? Thanks, -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:03, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Done, done, and done :-) --Magnus Manske 20:46, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper fix for en.wp's GFDL-with-disclaimers

Hi Magnus, could you please change CommonsHelper so that en:Template:GFDL-with-disclaimers on for example en:Image:ALMap-doton-Adamsville.PNG is not translated to {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}} and {{GFDL}}, but {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}} only. Cheers! Siebrand 16:16, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Done. --Magnus Manske 18:48, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. Siebrand 19:07, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper en.wp {{Self}} handling

Hi Magnus, could you please change CommonsHelper so that the template {{Self}} (from en.wp, but possibly other wikis) is dealt with a bit better? Example is on Image:MSMap-doton-Ethel.png with source w:Image:MSMap-doton-Ethel.png.

{{self|GFDL-with-disclaimers|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}

is translated to

{{Cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}, {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}}, {{Lang}}, and {{Self|author=[[:en:User:Bumm13|Bumm13]] at [http://en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia]|GFDL-with-disclaimers|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}

which is a bit too much :) Only

{{Self|author=[[:en:User:Bumm13|Bumm13]] at [http://en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia]|GFDL-with-disclaimers|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}

would have sufficed. Cheers! Siebrand 16:31, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper en.wp {{Cc-by-sa-any}} handling

Hi Magnus, another issue is {{Cc-by-sa-any}} on en.wp. Source image: w:Image:NEMap-doton-Eagle.png contains {{Cc-by-sa-any}}, {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}}

CommonsHelper makes this in Image:NEMap-doton-Eagle.png: {{Cc-by-sa}}, {{Cc-by-sa-1.0}}, {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}}, {{Cc-by-sa-any}}, {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}}

In this case, {{Cc-by-sa-any}}, {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}} would have sufficed. Cheers! Siebrand 18:49, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Should both be working now. --Magnus Manske 20:23, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks mate. Cheers! Siebrand 01:01, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

See this edit. Please take a look. --EugeneZelenko 14:59, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, should be fixed now! --Magnus Manske 19:24, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. Another one. --EugeneZelenko 15:34, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper fr > commons

Hello, every time we import an image with your tool, CommonsHelper add a template {{M}} as a license. This french template is like the english {{t}}. Can you remove it easily ? Its not realy are to remove it with hands, but some time i forgot. Thanks a lot. ~ bayo or talk 16:20, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Commons: Untertitel

--L.Willms 18:47, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Sollte jetzt wieder funktionieren. --Magnus Manske 20:42, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper - neuer Lizenzbaustein auf de.wiki

Moin, auf de.wiki wurde die Vorlage:Bild-UN zu Vorlage:Bild-frei geändert. CommonsHelper weiß das noch nicht: This image has no verificable good license, and can thus not be uploaded to commons through this tool. --GeorgHH 18:39, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

BadOldOnes: en.wp http check no longer needed

Hi Magnus, now that the en.wp database is present on the toolserver, it should no longer be needed to have BadOldOnes run throught the Checking en.wikipedia routine. That would also speed up the tool considerably. Could you make changes so that it gets the usage on en.wp directly from the database? Cheers! Siebrand 14:51, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

OK, should work now. Really much faster :-) --Magnus Manske 17:21, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Excellent. I'll try it out tomorrow. Cheers! Siebrand 22:26, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

I tried it yesterday and want to thank you for great tool!

I have two ideas for improvement:

  1. To mark edits made by Cat-a-lot.js as minor (always or depending on user preferences).
  2. Mode for automatically submitting modified pages. Now it's manual process.

Putting your tools in MediaWiki

Hallo Magnus,

I will join everybody who is praising you for your tools, I can't tell enough how they improve your life on Commons :-)

A small question for you : do you think some of these tools could be ported intro MediaWiki itself at some point ? As they are in JavaScript, they tend to slow down my computer quite a lot when I'm using many of them. I don't know much about programming, but I would think that if they are in the software itself, there would be less load on the client side ? I'm thinking in particular at HotCas.js, which could (should ?) be something in MediaWiki by default.

Thanks, le Korrigan bla 09:23, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the praise :-) The problem is that of the several MediaWiki extensions I have written, none (!) have meed used on Wiki(m)edia so far. There is a tradition of the tech cabal (tm) to ignore my extensions, no matter how useful. This is why I moved from code development to extensions to toolserver/JavaScript. Currently, it seems to be the only way to actually get my products to the users. --Magnus Manske 09:36, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Ouch. Already heard about this... a bit sad. How about putting directly into the /trunk/phase3 directory, and not as an extension ? (joking). Thanks anayway, le Korrigan bla 09:44, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper fix for it.wp's GFDL-con-disclaimer

Hi Magnus. Recently, on it.wiki we have standardized the GFDL template, like en.wiki. So, you should please fix CommonsHelper so that it:Template:GFDL-con-disclaimer and it:Template:GFDL-Utente-con-disclaimer on for example it:Immagine:1 Abarth 850 TC.JPG or it:Immagine:002 Montelupo - Villa Medicea.jpg are not traslate to {{GFDL}} but to {{GFDL-en}}? ({{GFDL-it}} also exists but is a redirect to GFDL-en}}). Thank you --Trixt 20:41, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 17:07, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

What image(s) in particular are you talking about? I thought I had them all categorized :-( --Magnus Manske 21:02, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Please see the images marked "orphan!" in your gallery. OTOH, I really like your mynoinfo tool and now my noinfo is clean.  :)

CommonsDupes issues because of software change

Hi Magnus. It looks like CommonsDupes is having issues because of changes in the pages for deleting objects. The deletion message is no longer being inserted into the input box. I guess it has to do with changes in the input box label. BadOldOnes has the same issues. Could you look into it? Thanks. Cheers! Siebrand 17:25, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Category/gallery preview problem

Hello, Magnus! Usually I bring stuff up on the mailing list but in this case it's been a while since you created this (amazing) tool, so I'll write here instead :)

ThumbnailPurger.js Idea

I was requested incorrect thumb of Image:Karmiel-stamp.jpg in Category:Stamps of Russia/Temp. I did it with such command. But I don't think that this is intuitive way of solving often happened problem. May be you could help? Thank you. --EugeneZelenko 14:28, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

I know about MediaWiki:ThumbnailPurger.js and used it in this case, but these particular thumb was not regenerated. Probably best solution should be improvement in MediaWiki purge action: regenerate all thumbnails. If this could not be implemented, may be it's possible to create script to regenerate all thumb on page/category or selected one? --EugeneZelenko 15:55, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Details, details

I have to echo comments above. I often find images added by you (mainly paintings) that don't have the date of the painting, or the gallery name, and are not categorised even by the painter, never mind the period etc. No one will find them to use them in that case. Maybe they are old & you do this better now - I hope. Thanks. 87.194.23.18 01:46, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

I didn't upload *that* many paintings, and the reason I didn't categorize them by period is that I don't have a clue which period they are from ;-) I usually add the information I find at the source, so they can be found through search anyway. Maybe {{Painting}} could automatically categorize things in the future? --Magnus Manske 12:02, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
