CommonsHelper fix for it.wp
Hi Magnus. I noticed that when a it.wiki's image is tagged with it:Template:PD-Utente or it:Template:PD-utente (exactly like Commons {{PD-self}}), CommonsHelper doesn't give this indication:
{{PD-user-w|it|Italian Wikipedia|user_name}}
So, should you please fix it? Thank you --Trixt 01:18, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Should work now. --Magnus Manske 12:30, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it works, thanks. Could you please make another fix? When the tag is it:Template:PD-Autore or it:Template:PD-autore with the "author" parameter (exactly like Commons {{PD-author}}), CommonsHelper should give:
{{PD-author|author}}
(now it gives only a generic {{PD}}). Thank you for your patience. --Trixt 17:52, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
CH request
Hi Magnus. Could you please add support for the Turkish tr:Template:KM-Kişisel. It should be treaded as PD-self, translating to {{PD-user-w|tr|Wikipedia|Username}} over here. Test image in CH. Cheers! Siebrand 07:58, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Image deletion warning | Image:Sergei Rachmaninoff - Concerto 1 in F minor, 1st movement.ogg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |
All the Rachmaninoff ogg files were tagged as copyvio - I've converted it to a regular deletion discussion. --Davepape 14:58, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
All of these files are copyright, according to the ASCAP ACE title search. For these files, I have listed links to the ACE datebase for the Concerto, no. 1 (for convenient, here it is again [1]), but not for the Symphonique Dances, although they are there, per this link. Searching for titles at ASCAP and Search the BMI repertoire is a fast and easy way to determine copyright status. However, it should be clear that given the fact that nothing will enter public domain in the US until 2018, and that the rule is 70 years after death (with exceptions), that these works are not public domain and should be deleted to avoid problems. Gretab 21:08, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Further Pandora records issues
I am going through this entire list and putting anything that I can find which I know is published and protected up for deletion. However, there are a few pieces by living composers such as Marcel_Farago_-_Bassoon_Pieces.ogg which might be settled directly with the composers themselves. I have found a website for Mr. Farago here which contains his email address. He might be willing to give an acceptable license, if you ask him. Otherwise, this will have to be put up for deletion as well. Gretab 11:42, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
Dear Magnus, I'm not sure if we need this cat at all and if we can hope at all to bring all media in this cat in a distant future, but it would be a nice start, if CommonsHelper puts a Template like {{Media from Wikipedia|lang=}}, which puts media into a subcat of Category:Files transfered from other wikimedia projects, on the media pages when uploading. What do you think? Regards, Code·is·poetry 20:24, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- For a while, it added [[Category:Files by user XXX of LANG.wikipedia]] to the pages. I don't recall why I stopped this, probably because someone asked me to ;-) But, create the template, and I'll turn it on. Note that currently, the category says "...German Wikipedia" (not "de"), so some template magic will be required. --Magnus Manske 21:30, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- I see. Actually, I'm not sure whether this categories really are used and I think I'll not bother starting to get into these things at this moment. Thanks for your reply, Code·is·poetry 22:11, 29 September 2007 (UTC) Ich sehe grad, dass ich mich hier garnicht so abzukrücken brauche.
MediaWiki:AddInformation.js
Hi Magnus. How should this script work? I'm using monobook, added the script in my monobook.js and I expected to see an extra link on pages in namespace 6, but it is not there. Am I doing something wrong? Could you add maybe a screenshot at the talk page of the extension and some explanation on the pupose of the script? Cheers! Siebrand 22:54, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- Of course, you'll only see it on pages without {{Information}}! :-) Try Image:Campanar de la Catedral Girona.jpg for example, it should work there. --Magnus Manske 09:48, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- It does not appear to be happening for me. I'll try it with MediaWiki:AddInformation.js as the only script in my monobook.js and report back. Siebrand 00:42, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- I put the script a bit higher in the foodchain[2] and now it works. Something else is probably broken. Thanks for the help. Cheers! Siebrand 00:49, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Flommons database lag
Hi again, Magnus. I was looking at my Flommons page today, and noticed that File:Briana Banks 2.jpg and File:Briana Banks 3.jpg were listed there, even though they were deleted on 10 August 2007, and none of my uploads since 5 August 2007 (the next was 9 August) were listed there. Please update your database, or at least publish an "as of" date. Thanks! — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 00:02, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- I'm using the toolserver database, so I can't do anything to update it. I'll try to fix display of deleted images. Frankly, I'm pleasently surprised someone uses Flommons at all :-) --Magnus Manske 09:46, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Global Whatlinkshere
Hi Magnus. Would it be possible for you to create some kind of global Whatlinkshere? The tool would show links from Wikimedia projects to our galleries and categories. See Commons:Village_pump#Is_there_any_way_to_bring_order_to_Categories.3F for context. I sure feel bold asking you this, but I don't know who else to ask and I can't code. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 18:55, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- I checked and was quite scared to find that we don't store links to commons in the database, the way we do for language links. This is a huge software flaw, IMNSHO. This needs to be fixed before any "global what-links-here" is possible, at least for commons (would work for "normal" language links, though, but that's now what you want...) --Magnus Manske 20:56, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Ulrich_Adam.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Ulrich_Adam.jpg. This image is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org).
Unless the permission information is given, the image may be speedy deleted after seven days. Thank you. OsamaK 03:47, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Bot category tagging
Hi. Great to see more bots here on Commons (formatting of image pages could use some bots!), but your upload bot seems a bit indiscriminate in sorting images into categories. Most do not exist, and many may be repetitive (such as a geography-themed image being stuck into a country, a state and a locality, against normal rules).
I agree that this is a hard thing to code correctly (and will always need some tidying up) - so I'd just request that you do tidy up at some point afterwards and make sure that all the images the bit uploads are sorted correctly. Maybe even auto-put them into a category like Category;Magnus Manske images needing sorting.
Examples of what I mean (before and after my resorting)
Extreme example, with a dozen of wrong cats (Flickr tags are often far from directly compatible, though they are a good starting point:
Cheers. Ingolfson 05:11, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- My bot uses flinfo to get the image description and categories (I did use CommonSense, but it was broken for some time). I will add a "fix categories" category, though. --Magnus Manske 08:11, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

PDF export for MediaWiki
Hallo Magnus !
I come here first to congratulate you about all the nice tools you're creating for us... and for a proposal for a tool. Yeah, I'm another damn Wikipedian who's got a great idea but no programming skills at all :-)
OK, here it is : a feature to export Wiki pages as PDF files has often been asked for, but so far nothing seems to achieve it. There is your Wiki2XML tool, which does ODT at its best (and fails for articles > 10kB, see this bug). There is mw:Extension:Pdf Export, I have asked that it could be installed on WMF wikis asit is said to be "stable", but I guess bug 11623 will be ignored as usual :-) All other stuff I've seen is obsolete.
Now, the question : would it be possible to put the PDF Export code on some toolserver tool, and get it working from there ? I don't whether huge changes to that code are required, whether it will eat all toolserver's resources, and whether you have any spare time and motivation for this :-) If you can't be bothered, no worries, this is not urgent...
Thanks ! le Korrigan →bla 18:12, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hi ! Thanks very much for making it available. There seems to be issues with UTF-8, like the curved apostrophe not rendering, or the arrows in footnotes, and basicaly any non-latin character. As far as I see on htmldoc's website, this will be included in the next version, so we'll have to wait... even though there doesn't seem to be much development since August 2006 !
- A few suggestions (do what you want with them...) :
- Maybe the header / footer could include the word "Wikipedia" (or whatever the project is).
- Putting the GFDL is good but to comply with, shouldn't we provide a link back to the article and authors ? Or even listing all authors (that could be an option), a bit like on this tool.
- Underlining the links clutters a bit the screen, maybe they could be best left in blue only / or plain black / or left as an option ? (I think I've seen an command line option for this in htmldoc).
- Same for numbering headings, I think it helps when you read a printed paper, you can much more easily quote a particular section.
- But these are details. Thank you ! le Korrigan →bla 11:28, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Direct transfer from Wikipedias to Commons
Hallo Magnus,
I have seen this thread today on Commons-l mailing-list. I do not subscribe so I answer you off-list : such a tool has already been developed by a French Wikipedian, but hasn't been used heavily due to a lack of motivated people on fr.wikipedia. Itsaccess is restricted by password but the author grants it to anybody who wants it (provided you understand enough about licenses and Commons).
Amongts its abilities, it : 1) fetches information through Commonshelper and checks the license, 2) checks filenames, 3) allows changing filenames (and automatically corrects links on the original project if there's not too many of them), 4) imports the image and tags the old one with NowCommons. It works this way because I have asked the designer to make it work this way, so it's pretty cool.
THe tool is at this address,a nd the upload account is User:Frog Bot. You may want to use it for inspiration regarding your tool : contact fr:user:Bayo. I think he speaks enough English, I can do some translating if you need.
Cheers, le Korrigan →bla 16:37, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Move-to-commons assistant
--Matt314 14:49, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi again! Do note that {{PD-Italy}} is a redirect to {{Copyvio}}. Please prevent your bot from uploading images using this tag, as it did with Image:Amadeo Bordiga.jpg. —LX (talk, contribs) 20:40, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- It's still not detecting {{PD-Italy}} as an improper licensing tag and therefore continues to tag its own uploads as copyright violations.[3][4][5]. —LX (talk, contribs) 21:24, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Both these examples fail. Presumably because of URL encoding issues. Cheers! Siebrand 10:28, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- It is recommended (though I forgot where) to use only ASCII filenames. Your examples actually fail because the local storage in the toolserver file system fails with that name. I added an ASCIIfier (was on my to-do-list anyway). It will now show a warning and the form with the ASCIIfied filename. --Magnus Manske 12:05, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- The warning is shown, but the process still fails. Is that something that can be resolved, or will those have to be done manually? Thanks for the quick responses, as ever... Cheers! Siebrand 12:12, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- OK, it works now. I uploaded them both (just to make sure:-), but with an "e" instead of "ë" (which is the auto-ASCIIfication). If you try to upload again (clicking on one of the links above), you will see this in action. Click on the button again, then it will warn you that the image exists, and switch to an alternate name. --Magnus Manske 12:33, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper issue: will overwrite existing media
Hi Magnus. I just had to test: what if I tried to have the bot upload it twice? I tested with Image:Willet2.jpg. I do not think that the bot should do this. It should refer to manual actions, I think. Haven't been brave enough to test it with a non-duplicate.
- this is now done. See above. --Magnus Manske 12:33, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper feature request: add NowCommons tag to source image
Also a feature request: would you consider auto tagging on the source wiki with the wiki's NowCommons template? That would help processes on the local wiki's side a lot, I think. Cheers! Siebrand 11:50, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Question about Special:Mypage/monobook.js
Hi Magnus. Since you wrote the software, you probably know the answer :) Was Special:Mypage/monobook.js or a similar page or setting available in the phase II software you wrote? Cheers, -- Bryan (talk to me) 14:58, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- Definitely not in the early incarnations. IIRC, this was added long after we moved to phase3. Note that this was not a "break" as it was between perl script and phase II. Rather, Lee Daniel Crocker refactored my code (which had grown a little wild;-) and added helper functions for debugging and finding time-critical spots; this was branched to phase3, which became the development tree. Quite some time after that, the Monobook skin was created, replacing my functional but rather dull default skin. IIRC, user-specific CSS and JS were introduced with or shortly after that. --Magnus Manske 20:38, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello,
we should be very thankful, if you'd tell what shall we do to transfer a set of files (total size of about 2G) from ru: to Commons. Is it possible to use this bot? And how should we use it, if it's possible? --MaryannaNesina 18:45, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- You can use CommonsHelper. If you check "Directly upload file", it will use the bot. If one of you knows HTML forms: You can also use the form values as GET parameters (within the URL); that way, you can create "upload links" for images on ru. But, please, make extra sure the images you transfer are under a free license; transfering unfree images will only put stress on the good people here at commons (who will delete them) and on you (for uploading images that get deleted later). Happy uploading, Magnus Manske 20:57, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you. It's not necessory to worry about licensing - all photos are self-made by several wiki-users, that are publishing articles about St.-Petersburg. Thanks once more :) --MaryannaNesina 13:40, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Another thing, when you change the commonshelper parameters could you leave me or Siebrand a message? We have a template at the dutch wikipedia which directly links to your very nice tool. - Feature, of course! ;-) No, just a strange internal setting. Fixed. Also, I repaired the lang/language parameter (that was what you were refering to, right?). I broke that trying to harden my tools after the Big Tool Crash a few days ago... --Magnus Manske 22:22, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- I just uploaded Image:Barendrecht Pendrechtse Molen einde dag.jpg. All seems to be working fine! I was refering to the language parameter yes. Your tool is called like this http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/commonshelper.php?interface={{CONTENTLANGUAGE}}&image={{PAGENAMEE}}&language={{CONTENTLANGUAGE}}&commonsense=1&reallydirectupload=1&doit . Hi Magnus, please don't upload blurred images like this. I'm not at all happy with its low quality and doubt that it's of any avail. Thanks for considering. --Ies 10:29, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- You're right. Didn't show up on my thumnail view when uploading :-( --Magnus Manske 13:07, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikitravel Shared
I am big fan of your image search and uploading tools. I was wondering if you'd be interested in adding Wikitravel Shared to either type of tools. I've been importing some images from over there and would love to standardize the process. I create Template:wikitravel as a start. Thanks --Padraic 16:09, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- Nice idea. I have added rudimentary WikiTravel support to FIST. I might do uploading later, though for 9000 images (most of which will probably not be copied to commons) it might be overkill. In any case, I'll be traveling next week, so I won't be getting around to implement that for a while. --Magnus Manske 17:42, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- Nonetheless, great response time! Thanks for considering the idea. --Padraic 15:21, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
kurt Vonnegut image
This exact same image is on Wikipedia. It says there that is copyrighted and that its original source is http://www.case.edu/univrel/marcomm/portfolio/photography.html. The photo was taken by Mike Sands at a Vonnegut talk February 4, 2004. Note the Flickr user, David Terrar is not the author. He lives in England and Vonnegut's talk was in Ohio. It says on Flickr that this photo was taken or uploaded October 2007..I believe that Terrar took this photo of Vonnegut from the Case Western University site. ie. http://www.case.edu/univrel/marcomm/portfolio/photography.html. Anyway, could you please check this matter out. Thanks, danwex
- First, it would have been helpful to tell me what image you are talking about. After searching, I found (among book covers) Image:Kurt Vonnegut at CWRU (471340529).jpg. I Suppose that's the one you are talking about.
- Second, why come to me? I didn't upload it. It was transfered from Flickr through my bot, that's all. Could have been anyone. I have clarified this (again) on both my bot and its talk page now.--Magnus Manske 12:06, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
CommonsHelper fr->commons
Hello Magnus. I dont see JIRA entry for CommonHelper so i post here.
There are a little problem with license. The french template CC-BY-SA is used for CC-BY-SA-1.0 (its a redirection, like Commons). CommonsHelper replace {{CC-BY-SA}} with both {{Cc-by-sa-1.0}} and {{Cc-by-sa}}.
Example : http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Radar_auto_face_active.jpg&oldid=8360085
Do you think its possible to add a filter ? Else i can request a robot to remove all use of the redirection CC-BY-SA on the french Wikipedia. And thanks for your autoupload option, its very helpful. ~ bayo or talk 09:59, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Gruß, Code·is·poetry 14:10, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
FileUploadBot: listing uploader request
Hi Magnus. Could I ask you a favor? Sorry to pester you so much. Do you think it would be possible to add a feature to your bot which says who the requester of the file upload is? I'm suspicious often; Image:Example.jpeg was uploaded right as the other files by this author were being deleted on en as probably copyvios. There are also other times when there are obvious copyvios or poorly named images, etc; unfortunately, I cannot track who requested the upload and give them a message (or, in some cases a warning). If this would be possible, it would be greatly appreciated. Again, sorry if I'm too much of a hassle. Patstuart 21:31, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Skipping list in Map sources...
First, please forgive my bad English, as I am a native French speaker. And thank you very much for all the great tools you develop.
About Map sources / GeoHack, I think there is some feature that would be very useful: the ability, for each user, to set a cartographic service as his preferred one, and to skip the list, so as to go directly to the service he has choosen.
I think it would be possible by customizing one's Monobook, but I really don't know how to do this.
About two months ago, I have requested the Javascript Wikiproject on the Wikipedia in French for such a feature, but as you can see, no one answered me...! ;)
Hope you can help! Thanks a lot. /84•5/11.11.2007/00:58 UTC/
- Hi again. I have another suggestion. Some users on the French Wikipedia would like to be able to set a "zoom" parameter in a Map Sources URL -- let's say from 0 for the whole Earth, to 19 for the highest possible scale, as on Google Maps and Wikimapia. Your tool would then make the conversion with the "scale" and "span" variables.
- Sorry if I'm asking too much... I have no idea of the amount of time required to do so.
- Cheers! /84•5/12.11.2007/13:01 UTC/
- Hi! OK, geohack is located on the toolserver, which doesn't know about your current login at wikipedia. So, customization would be very hard at best. I keep arguing that geohack should be integrated into MediaWiki, which would make customization easy, but noone listens to me either ;-) As for the zooming - there's already a parameter in there where you can specify the type (city, country, etc.). But, I'll put it on my to-do list, which is very long indeed :-( --Magnus Manske 18:35, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- You are right, it would be better if geohack was part of MediaWiki! But I don't know how to support that suggestion (and I don't think my opinion has any weight).
- For customization, I thought it could be done that way:
- In {{GeoTemplate}}, each link to an external service would be tagged with a string; for example, for the Google Maps item:

would lead you directly to the same view on Google Maps as if you had followedhttp://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/geo/geohack.php?params=48.85825_N_2.2945_E_scale:2000
,
and then clicked on the Satellite link in the Google Maps item. - Users interested in the ability to skip the list and go directly to their favorite service, would add a script in their
monobook.js
. That script, each time a URL beginning withhttp://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/geo/geohack.php
would be detected, would concatenate it with&service=<favorite_service>
, the user replacing<favorite_service>
with the appropriate string (for exampleGoogle_Maps/satellite
if the satellite view of Google Maps is his favourite service).
- Your tool on the toolserver would take a new
- Do you think it is imaginable ?
- For zooming, I knew about the existence of the
type
parameter, but on the French Wikipedia, there are some users who feel that azoom
paramater would be easier to use. - I know it is time consuming, so I understand that it will not be implemented tomorrow (if it is some day).
- Thank you for your attention, anyway. Cheers. /84•5/20.11.2007/02:08 UTC/
Image Tagging Image:Gabriel_Cramer.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Gabriel_Cramer.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. A question about File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske)
What do ou mean when you write "Originally from sv.wikipedia; description page is/was here. Transfer was stated to be made by User:Lokal Profil." on HMS Stockholm i h rt vader.jpg. Also your bot doesn't seem able to handle swedish letters. /Lokal_Profil 01:58, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
- The "Transfer was..:" part is generated because someone (presumably you) has given a user name in the "User:" field of the commonshelper form. As for the other issue, that's a problem with the uploading core I use; that was not written by me, and I'll have to make some serious modifications to it, once I have time... --Magnus Manske 21:25, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, I thought you had personally uploaded the file. I now see that someone else has done it (using commons helper) and has added my name as user. Is there any way to check which other files have been uploaded with my username in the form? Or to find out which user added my name to the form. /Lokal_Profil 22:50, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- 1. Any file you don't regognize on this list... 2. No, I have no way of knowing the commons user name of a user on the toolserver, and I'm not allowed to ask for a password by toolserver guidelines. --Magnus Manske 09:10, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- A few to many pages link to my name already for that to be feasible (flickrreviewer) but thanks anyway. and the password part is understandable.
- On a sidenote. Is ther a filter preventing images which are tagged with e.g. fair use templates from being uploaded using the File Upload Bot? And if there is could a few more of the swedish templates (such as image suggested for deletion templates) be added? I've seen one or two images which have been uploaded to commons after they were tagged for deletion on sv.wiki /Lokal_Profil 23:29, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

CommonsHelper fix for oldwikisource
I cannot transfer images from Multilingual Wikisource via your CommonsHelper. When I tried entering the project as wikisource but left the language code blank, the tool assumed me trying to transfer an image from English Wikisource. Please try to fix it as English Wikisource does not entirely replace Multilingual Wikisource. Thank you.--Jusjih 20:44, 18 November 2007 (UTC) (admin here and on Wikisource)
- OK, I introduced some special magic for you :-) Use "xxx" as the language, and it will work for old wikisource. I also override the license check here, as it seems none of the images on old wikisource are tagged correctly. Please, please fix the licenses when uploading, otherwise I'll get blamed for my bot transfering unlicensed BS! --Magnus Manske 21:28, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- I just uploaded Image:Preparation of qurasah.jpg, Image:Al-Nadhir Tag al-Sir Bashir.JPG, Image:Babur dar almanasir atram.jpg, and Image:Turiah.jpg through your tool. I could get the text, but I could not upload them directly through your tool, so I had to save them to my computer and then upload. As Image:Gebel musa near wadi kirbekan.jpg was already transferred from English Wikipedia, I got this message: "Could not connect to wiki-p.db.ts.wikimedia.org :" instead of a warning that an image with the same name is already on Commons. Though not fully perfect, thank you for allowing Multilingual Wikisource image transfers. For direct uploads, I would consider it better if you can make the user who uses your tool instead of you as the uploader to Commons, so problem notices would go to the users of your tool instead of you.--Jusjih 22:46, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- I will try and fix that later today. As for user identification, I'm not allowed to ask for commons passwords on the toolserver by guidelines. --Magnus Manske 09:12, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I see your bot has copied this file from en:Image:Tivedshambo 2002-03-06 Silver Stream Railway.jpg to Commons. Whilst this is completely allowable under the terms of the GFDL 1.2 licence, I do have some comments to make:
- Firstly, I feel it would have been polite to have been asked beforehand. I have already transferred most of my photos from enwiki to commons manually - there is a reason for not transferring the rest. In the case of this image, the photo is a print from my pre-digital days, and I intended to re-scan it at a higher resolution for Commons.
- If you do not feel it appropriate to ask, I should at least have been informed. The only reason I found out is because another user tagged the enwiki image as {{NowCommons}}, and I have the image on my watchlist.
- To clarify, I did not transfer the image. Someone using my bot, most likely through one of my toolserver tools, did. That said, frankly, had I transfered that single image of yours, I probably wouldn't have notified you; though I would have before transfering a larger set of your images. What you consider polite may be considered talkpage spam by others, and additional work by the transferer. If the transfer of your images to commons is important to you, you should put all of them on your watchlist - that way, you'll be notified of any change. You can even have wikipedia mail you on changes on watched pages, so you can be up-to-date by the second!
- The bot did not convert the description correctly [7]
- Finally, and most importantly, the bot applied an incorrect licence tag to the image. I use the enwiki {{GFDL 1.2}} tag which clearly states "... Version 1.2 and no other versions ..." (my emphasis). This is because I do not have a crystal ball to know whether I will accept future versions. However your bot tagged it with the {{GFDL}} tag, which allows future versions. It also left the GFDL 1.2 tag in place, leading to a contradiction.
- I'm the first to admit that the bot isn't perfect; otherwise, I'd have called it "Agent Smith", right? :-) I'll look into the description problem, and see what I can do. Also, I have added a rule to omit {{GFDL}} and use the appropriate permission text when {{GFDL 1.2}} is present. Note that, given hundreds of templates, their combination, and that in hundreds of languages, it is hardly possible to get all of these correctly coded; human supervision will always be required for rewriting free-text like this.
I would be grateful if you could take these comments into account before copying any more of my images. Many thanks. – Tivedshambo (talk) 07:48, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- As I said, it's not up to me. Even without my bot, anyone is free to copy your images to Commons. I have moved all my images from de and en to Commons some time ago, and I am glad that they are available to both other wikimedia projects and people just looking for images. And, noone will stop you from uploading hi-res versions of your images to Commons later; on the contrary, they will be welcomed here! --Magnus Manske 22:00, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Dutch information template
Hi Magnus, i transfered nl:Afbeelding:Westerman_graf_(Amsterdam).JPG to commons. Looks like your bot had some trouble with the information template, see [8]. At the dutch wikipedia the information template can be used with different variables:
{{Information| |Description= |Source= |Date= |Author= |Permission= |other_versions= (optional variable, can be left out) }}
or:
{{Information| |Beschrijving= |Bron= |Datum= |Auteur= |Toestemming= |other_versions= (optionele variabele, mag weggelaten worden) }}
Or a mix of English and Dutch variables.... Multichill 14:12, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Deletion warnings
Hi, I've left you 2 warnings, quite a small number for "pestering". I followed the link to the bot's talk page where there's a link to your talk page. We are supposed to let the uploader know about copyright deletions and, though I now realize that's not you, there may be something wrong with the bot that you need to know about. --Simonxag 16:00, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry if "pestering" was too strong (I'm not a native speaker, sometimes I get the tone just almost wrong;-) But, you did see the giant red-bordered boxes on my bot page (and its talk page) that explain the situation, right? --Magnus Manske 09:24, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Is there any chance of the bot leaving an easy-to-follow trail back to the uploader who used it? There are quite a lot of copyvios and the uploaders need to know about these, so they won't repeat the mistake. It would be quite a natural thing for an uploader, discovering that an image has vanished without explanation, to just replace it. --Simonxag 02:53, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- By toolserver policy, I am not allowed to ask for Commons usernames and passwords, so identification is not possible. CommonsHelper allows you to voluntarily enter your user name, but sadly that's about as far as I can go. --Magnus Manske 09:49, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Potential File Upload Bot upload issue / original location
Sorry, but I tried and couldn't really find a comment function on that other link. Also, I have already been redirected here twice on the way from the bot.
Image:Piha2.jpg at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Piha2.jpg was uploaded with your bot. On Wikipedia, the image at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Piha2.jpg was checked by MetsBot for deletion, but the bot could not recognize the license on Commons. This may be an issue with MetsBot though.
Using other scripts, which I tend to use, the Commons version of an uploaded image also includes a link back to the original Wikipedia version. This is useful to check whether the original image was correctly deleted. Your version only leads back to Wikipedia itself. Would be nice to add that to the features. Gadgets
Hello Magnus,
Gadgets are now installed on Commons, so I've copied some of your tools so that they can be used as gadgets (see your preferences or Special:Gadgets). So far I've only copied/pasted the code, so you'll have to find a way to synchronise the two versions, or keep only one... but that's too complicated for me.
Cheers, le Korrigan →bla 11:09, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- I've moved the talk pages and created "JavaScript redirects" to the "Gadgets" versions, so there are the "official" ones from now. I also put back the "add information" script, so that should work again. --Magnus Manske 11:32, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
TOO MANY CATS!
Please have a look at how your bot categorized this image Image:5nahar.jpg (before I reduced the cats it had placed it in, of course). Surely, there should be a cut-off to the amount of categories it 'spams' them over. I know you warn users uploading images against fire-and-forget uploads, but should this happen? Ingolfson 08:28, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
- The categories are not created by me, but by the CommonSense tool. Technically, I could limit the number of categories, but (a) AFAIK your example is an unusual extreme, (b) it's not really harmful (just ugly), and (c) what categories of the suggested ones should I use? Just "cutting off" at 5 or so isn't really a nice way to go IMHO. --Magnus Manske 10:08, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Upload form
- See also User talk:Pfctdayelise#Upload form.
I've put together a prototype for a newly structured upload form that, amongst other things, forces people to enter a source, an author, and a license before uploading. Works ok on Firefox, but I could use help with handling multilingualism in an easily extensible way and with getting it to work properly on other browsers, in particular on IE. Interested? - It doesn't work fine on IE6 though. Something to do with the way event handlers are attached to elements, I guess. But I'll have to test more to figure out precisely what the problems are. Unfortunately, I don't know IE well. Lupo 20:04, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Commonshelper removes special characters?
Hoi Magnus Manske, why does commonshelper remove special characters? Multichill 16:48, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
It should only remove special characters from filenames. This is a recommendation somewhere on Commons, because not everyone has all characters readily available on their keyboard. Also, it's a bug in a Perl script which isn't mine but which I use, and I figure it'll me quite some work to fix, so I keep pushing it to the bottom of the queue ;-) --Magnus Manske 10:27, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
CommonsHelper for Meta?
As I try to move m:Image:Sonnenblume.jpg here, I cannot do it through CommonsHelper. Could you please enable image transfer like what I requested for Old Wikisource? If you are concerned of allowing direct uploads of untagged images, at least I would like to see the cut-and-paste image description.--Jusjih 23:41, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
- Strange, I just tried it, and I get the source, no problem. Try this (you'll get a "image exists" warning, but just hit the button again). Did you remember to change the project to "wikimedia"? --Magnus Manske 10:21, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- Not before, but thank you for your hint. I cannot directly upload a file with your method, so I will save it locally and then upload to Commons.--Jusjih 20:16, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Japanese image names
I love CommonsHelper, and you probably know this already, but it seems files like ja:Image:基礎自治体位置図 04206.svg with Japanese characters in the name cannot currently be uploaded directly. It mangles the image name to something like 5c/%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F_04206.svg, and then it can't find it. Arthena 17:07, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- As I said three messages or so above, it's a technical limitation by third-party code. I'll be working on it once I have lots of time (which is not likely to happen soon, unfortunately...). --Magnus Manske 08:49, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Thank you!
Hi there
I've noticed that your File Upload Bot has recentely transferred some files from the Afrikaans Wikipedia to the Commons. Thank you for this - I had started transferring files manually, but I'm sure you are aware of how time consuming this can be. These automated transfers really helped a lot - it takes only a few seconds to update/correct a few tidbits of information and has helped me tremendously. Thanks again, Anrie 12:53, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Flickr review status
I have asked for a removal of your ability to review Flickr images. See Commons_talk:Flickr_images/reviewers#User:File_Upload_Bot_.28Magnus_Manske.29. Thank you. -Nard 15:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I notice that Image:Bill Cosby (56318935).jpg was uploaded and tagged as reviewed by your bot, recognized by someone as a copyright violation, then deleted... then uploaded by your bot AGAIN, recognized by yet someone else as a copyright violation, and I just redeleted it. Is your bot supposed to do things like this? -- Infrogmation 21:42, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- Magnus, you might like to see some of the suggestions that have been put forward in an attempt to address the concerns raised. In addition to my comments there, perhaps the bot could check a protected page on Commons where admins can list Flikcr users who have a history of incorrectly licences images so the bot would refuse to upload such images and point to an appropriate place to discuss this on wiki. If you could do this then it would be good to have the bot record on wiki such failed attempts so that the community can keep an eye out for a possible manual upload. Regards. Commonshelper documentation
Apologies if this is in the wrong place- but I can'r make head or tail of how I am supposed to post a comment on the bug tracking software before I forget all the details. I have just spent an evening rewriting the English documentation, correcting the errors I left last time I edited it. But of course it has changed and the documentation hasn't. The foreign language docs are even more out of date. These are my bugfix requests:
- A version number on the data entry screen. Documentation writers would then be able to monitor if they are documenting the current version. The screendump images must refer to the version number, at the moment, the product has four checkboxes but the screen dump shows two.
- The name of the product is Commonshelper. This should be in the bold title- just to make documentation writing easier.
- The image name must not include Image:- this is explained. It is more user friendly just to strip Image:, if it occurs in the php, and make documentation easier. If this is language specific, the work can go in the txt look up table.
- Similarly, in the final Add now commons stage, the user is left to type something in the Title box. The :en:doc says type transfer- couldn't that be be done by the software.
- At the end of the process one is left hanging, what is needed is a next image button, that will do the same as the browser back arrow.
Now for the additional feature requests. In the data entry screen I would like two extra optional fields
- Additional categories: to work like commonist, cat1|cat2|cat3 etc. These would need to be validated on upload, and issue a nonfatal warning if the cat doesnot exist. I have thought about a force new cat checkbox- but Keep it simple it is easier to document.
- A geotag box (of camera if known)that will validate the {{location dec|51.3800|0.5200}} notation generated from Googlemaps with the JS bookmark. This would kill two birds with one stone!
Needless to say if I can be of any assistance in doing any of this, then click my box. Mit freundlichen Grüssen, ClemRutter 23:48, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

self and PD
Hi Magnus Manske, could you add a replacement in commonshelper for transfering pictures from the nl wikipedia? {{self|PD-auteur}} should be changed into {{PD-user-nl|<uploader>}}. Thank you, this will prevent pictures from getting into Category:Unknown - No timestamp given like Image:Bgmrollsroycesilvershadow.jpg did. See nl:Afbeelding:Averechts.jpg for an example picture. Multichill 11:43, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
- Somehow, I couldn't get it to use PD-user-nl, but I managed to do self|PD-self. It will show the correct license and backlink to the author at nl, and also that it was made by that user. It's the best I can do for now. Commonshelper gets really tricky to handle nowadays, because of all kinds of special cases. --Magnus Manske 21:01, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you, it works. Multichill 22:22, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Bad old ones: Category:Copyright violation has moved to Category:Copyright violations
Category:Copyright violation has moved to Category:Copyright violations. I don't know if there are any hardcoded references to this in the Bad old ones tool, but if so, they need to be updated. —LX (talk, contribs) 11:11, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
- The category names are not hardcoded into the tool; the category name is rather passed as a parameter. So, the respective wiki page(s) should be changed accordingly. --Magnus Manske 22:14, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- Figured as much. Should already be done in that case. Thanks! —LX (talk, contribs) 23:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
ResizeGalleries.js
Hi. We're talking about introducing the ResizeGalleries.js script on sv.wiki and a question popped up. If the screen resolution is sufficiently low will the number of images per row then be reduced from the default 4 or does the script only increase the number of images per row? /Lokal_Profil 02:11, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Upload form redesign
Could you spare 15 minutes to half an hour and beta-test the redesigned upload forms using IE7 again? There have been so many changes that I'm not absolutely sure anymore they'll still work on browsers other than IE6 and Firefox.
There are three forms to test:
- Original design with extra fields, but one single description field.
- Alternate design proposed by Pfctdayelise with extra fields and one description field per language (more can be added by clicking the "+"-buttton).
- Basic form for experienced users: no additional fields, just input validation.
Documentation is at MediaWiki:UploadForm.js/Documentation. A mock-up of how Commons:Upload could look if this were enabled globally is at User:Lupo/upload (using the alternate design).
Would be great if you could help out with that; I don't have access to IE7 myself. Oh, and which one do you think is better: the original design with one single description, or the alternate design with the description-per-language fields? Thanks, Lupo 15:14, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
CommonsHelper capitalization problem
(Sorry, I have no idea how to report bugs through the tracker. Does not even let me log in, saying I don't have pesmission...)
If you use a name starting with lowercase, then the link to the image will be wrong (as the fileserver is capitalization-sensitive). The image description will be downloaded correctly though, which makes the source of error rather difficult to find. --Tgr 21:22, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
CommonsHelper Hungarian
I created a Hungarian translation. Do you need me to give commonshelper.php stuff, or will the script figure it out from interwiki links?
Also, is there a way to translate the "asciified" warning line, the "add nowcommons" line and the file upload bot output?
Thanks, --Tgr 21:30, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
The user, ignore warnings and directly upload lines aren't internationalized either. --Tgr 22:44, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

HotCat
Hallo Magnus, ich hab auf der Commons:Village Pump man angeregt, dass HotCat per default aktiviert wird. Was meinst Du dazu? Maintainer hat es ja inzwischen schon einige... --Dschwen 19:08, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ja! Ich habe leider nicht viel Zeit, mich um meine JS-Teile zu kümmern, daher freut es mich, dass so viele darum kümmern. Und vielleicht sogar mehr, wenn es default wird... --Magnus Manske 21:11, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
File Upload Bot - Admin reviewed Flickr images category
Dont you want to remove the automatical placement of Admin reviewed Flickr images category for the processed images since the bot is publically available?--Kozuch 23:26, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
- AFAIK, there's a bot running that "review" based on the license given on Flickr. Mine does the same when uploading anyway, so there's no reason to to it twice. --Magnus Manske 18:14, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, I got it now! :) --Kozuch 10:10, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Re: Upload form
Maybe you missed it above at #Upload form redesign... I'd really appreciate it if you could test a little on IE7. Lupo 20:41, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! The image overwrite warning has always been just above the upload button. That's where it still is. If that becomes a problem, I could try moving that table row up to the top of the form... The missing language templates will need to be written. For categories, the script forces the loading of HotCat: you should have had HotCat's category bar below the "Watch this page" checkbox, above the upload button. Lupo 19:51, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, OK. I have HotCat enabled by default, so I didn't know it came by default with the script. --Magnus Manske 19:57, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Magnus, dein Bot scheint ein bisschen Probleme damit zu haben, einige der letzten Uploads (bsp.) haben die Category:Hidden categories hartgecodet in der Beschreibung. Kannst du dir das mal angucken? Gruß, Code·is·poetry 09:53, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Der Bot verwendet nur, was CommonSense an Kategorien erzeugt. Werde es entsprechend weiterleiten. --Magnus Manske 11:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Images moved from it.wiki via bot
Hi Magnus. When an image is moved from it.wiki to Commons, many informations (like description, author, source or ticket OTRS) are lost because on it.wiki there is a template like {{Information}}: its name is Template:Informazioni file. So, for the transfer, I think that could be useful this scheme:
{{Information |Description = |Source = |Date = |Author = |Permission = |Other_versions = }} |
{{Informazioni file |Descrizione = |Fonte = |Data = |Autore = |Licenza = |Altre_versioni = }} |
Additionally, on it.wiki's template there is also this parameter:
|OTRS =
It is possible to convert it in {{PermissionOTRS}}? Example:
|OTRS = 20005647474849849
in |
{{PermissionOTRS|20005647474849849}} |
Thank you very much--Trixt 01:58, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
- "Informazioni file" should be recognized now. Might not work if given as "Informazioni_file" (note the underscore), though; need to test. Could you give me a link to an image on it.wikipedia that actually uses the OTRS field, preferably not transfered to Commons yet? I tried to find one, but only saw templates with an empty OTRS field. I'd need an example to actually test with. --Magnus Manske 23:30, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- I found this one: it:Immagine:Nero di Parma.jpg. Note that, in this case, before the number there's "Ticket#", not only the number. If you think that a template like {{PermissionOTRS}} is better than "OTRS" parameter, I could try to suggest a change. Thanks--Trixt 21:21, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
A problem
I'm not a very common Commons user so I'm not quite sure how these things work, but I wanted to give you a heads up that your bot uploaded an image a couple of months after I uploaded a cropped version of the same picture. Perhaps a process may need fixing? PageantUpdater 09:44, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- My bot is user-operated; a user needs to tell it "upload this picture". I have filtering in place to prevent uploading of the same imagefrom flickr twice. I'll investigate as to why it failed. --Magnus Manske 15:41, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Transferring images from English Wikipedia
Hello,
For at least the second time, I have noticed your bot transfer an image like and put {{Featured picture}} and {{Picture of the day}} when these meanings are not the same from en.wp to Commons. So, please, at least for these two templates, put these in comments and don't just transfer them. It would be much appreciated. thanks, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 11:33, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Dear Magnus,
your bot is very problematic, as it is often used to upload copyvios. I will ask the others users on Commons, whether we should still allow this bot on Commons.

How can we know who operated your File Upload Bot?
I know it's possible to know that with User:Flickr upload bot so it would be very useful to have such a possibility for your bot as well. Thanks. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 10:34, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm traveling right now so there won't be any solution this week ;-) IMO the Flickr upload bot mechanism is a little cumbersome. I've been planning a more universal solution, a tool that manages user accounts on the toolserver that can be verified against a wikipedia user account. Then, one could use the bot after doing the "edit dance" just once. My idea was to offer this service to all tools on the toolserver. But, no code yet... --Magnus Manske 18:55, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Commonshelper commonscat
Hi Magnus,
Would it be possible to add a line of code to convert this line on a original image:
[[commons:Category:<some cat>]]
to
[[Category:<some cat>]]
here at commons? This way people can tag pictures with commons categories prioir to transfer (which already is mandatory if you use en:Template:Commons ok). Multichill 14:22, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Wieder mal FileUploadBot
--Magnus Manske 12:37, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
Source for geocoding
Hi! Could you make your File Upload Bot add a source:Flickr tag to the geocoding of the images it uploads from Flickr? It's really nice that it grabs that metadata, but often the geocoding quality on Flickr is horrendous compared to what people have been doing here on Commons. Such a tag would then mark the data as "bad" without saying so, and people reviewing could remove it when they correct the location.
On a related note, Panoramio is planning to allow their users to release images with Creative Commons licenses.[9] It will probably be a great resource to import from, and though the quality of the geocoding there should be quite a lot better than on Flickr, it would still be good to tag it the same way once the bot can copy images from there. --Para 14:35, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
- I've added the source:Flickr tag to the auto-generated {{Location}} template. I haven't tested it, but it looks straight-forward enough. The Panoramio site seems to have some tech trouble; I might add Panoramio to FIST and create a bot once that's running smoothly, and once I have some time on my hands;-) --Magnus Manske 21:34, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, it works fine with both bot and user uploaded images. The first one I spotted, Image:Eiffel Tower (1).jpg, was only a couple of metres off, that's quite good quality for Flickr! The Panoramio people will probably take a while to set their things up and then have their users changing licenses, so no hurries there. --Para 23:48, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oh actually, looks like it adds the location twice now, in decimal and in dms. Just one ought to be enough. --Para 00:04, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- I haven't been too active lately so didn't notice early enough, but it looks like you commented out the wrong line and the source parameter hasn't been added for quite a while now. Since you're working on CommonsHelper a bit more lately, maybe you can take a look at this simple feature too? --Para 19:54, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'm getting my Information template prefilled here, which produces the missing tag. I've hacked a fix in now; maybe Flominator should use this too. --Magnus Manske 20:29, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Gruß, Code·is·poetry 11:44, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Commons Helper bugs
When transferring images from the en Wikipedia with the license template {{GFDL-self-with-disclaimers}}, the Commons version will have both the {{GFDL}} and {{GFDL-self-with-disclaimers}} license templates without an attribution included in the license ({{GFDL-user-w}}}. See Image:Alarm.gif for an example. Additionally, the en Wikipedia template {{ConfirmationImageOTRS}} does not automatically translate to the Commons template {{PermissionOTRS}}. Commons Helper bugs (in transferring from jawp)
Hello, Magnus. I feel sorry to tell you that I blocked your bot for a while. Please fix the bug so that all the description in Japanese character can be read, or stop transferring from jawp at all, will you?
By the way I found your bot also have uploaded many images which have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests. Your comment may be welcome there.--miya 16:54, 11 April 2008 (UTC) i luv pickles
File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske) incorrectly moved Image:Munch_vampire.jpg
FYI, I believe the image Image:Munch_vampire.jpg should have remained on english wikipedia as while it is public domain in the USA (date of first publication plus 95 years), it is still under copyright in Norway until 2015 (life of author plus 70 years). I could not work out who had used the bot (or how to undo the bot's move) so I left this help message on the Village Pump. -Wikibob 17:08, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- I would post a request at the English Wikipedia to have the image undeleted there, then leave a note on the image there explaining the copyright circumstances. Then list the Commons copy for deletion. Kelly 02:20, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Dupes tool improvement needed
Please see Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Dupes_tool. We really need a way to start at any letter of the alphabet with this tool As is, it always starts with numbers, or A if there are no dupes beginning with numbers. Consequently, the dupes that are in the middle or end of the alphabet never get looked at via the tool; you can only look at them one at a time and they stay in the duplicate category forever now that the category holds over 4000 images. Thanks. — Rlevse • Talk • 12:16, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- I've rewritten parts of commons_dupes. You can now add e.g. "&start=N" to the URL to start with images beginning with "N". You can also use longer strings to subdivide it even more. It seems to work OK, but I'll be travelling this week, so if anything funny happens with it, the "original" is still available here. --Magnus Manske 17:13, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- Cool! It seems to work okay. Thanks. — Rlevse • Talk • 20:18, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Suggestion
Magnus, I think it would be a good idea for CommonsHelper to refuse uploads from en Wikipedia that use the license template {{PD}}. The template has been deprecated both there and here, and the backlog won't get better here if we continue to cross-wiki images from en with the deprecated template. Kelly 01:36, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

You violated those rights by uploading Image:Park City, Utah (2).jpg my photo without appropriate photo credit --simple refering to the Wikipedia page is not sufficient. You also posted that my work is GDFL but not CC, when that is inaccurate. please be careful next time, doing things like that soils the good will of the wiki projects and makes people like me not want to share photos. --Bobak 17:07, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, sorry, didn't realize. I transferred that some time ago (actually, I don't even remember this one); I wrote some software in the meantime to do these transfers, so that shouldn't happen again. --Magnus Manske 19:07, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Greek text from description during direct upload
Hi, I'm trying to make it single-click easy to users to upload images from el.wikipedia to commons. Here is the only problem:
Uploading using your bot, ruins the greek text in the description [10]. Without direct upload there is no problem with the description [11].
For the direct upload I used http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/commonshelper.php?interface=el&language=el&image=Siraggio_(Piraeus).JPG&newname=&project=wikipedia&username=Geraki&commonsense=1&reallydirectupload=1&doit=1
Log: /tmp/chcO5NO4-dir/debug.txt.
Is there any chance to fix it? Geraki TLG 18:51, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
- Should work better now. --Magnus Manske 19:07, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately it doesn't. [12] Geraki TLG 07:41, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Transfers done by File upload Bot
Hey Magnus,
On the talkpage of your bot, you state: "I (Magnus Manske) am currently testing an automatic transfer of images from wikipedias to commons. This is the bot user for the task." Automatic transfers seem very nice and I know it is done more on Commons, but your bot does not seem to notify the original uploader about the transfer, even not when deletion for a transferred image is requested. I think it would be a good idea to do this: with the transfers you did last night, a view of the users from nl-wikipedia will not at all be happy. Regards, Ciell 14:58, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
Error with File Upload Bot
I have been moving files from en: to here, and whenever I use the automatic upload, It adds {{Ambox}} under license information. If you could fix it, that would be great. Thanks Legoktm 03:41, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- It stopped happening. Thanks anyway Legoktm 00:04, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Can you teach your bot to get the image from the source wikipedia? Now the information is incomplete on several images. Ciell 09:30, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
CommonsHelper bug
Images with license template {{Self2}} are still not transferring correctly from en Wikipedia - the license is being broken into its component parts and the "self" part is still being lost. Sorry, I looked at the JIRA system and just couldn't figure out how ot add a new bug there. Kelly 07:12, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- Also the {{Attribution}} template is not transferring correctly from en, the name of the author is being dropped from the tag. Kelly 15:15, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- The en Wikipedia template {{GFDL-1.2-en}} also is not transferring correctly - the bot adds an additional {{GFDL}} license tag, this alters the terms of the original license. Kelly 01:26, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
- Add the en Wikipedia template {{GFDL-self-with-disclaimers}}. File Upload Bot translates this into three copyright tags - {{GFDL}}, {{GFDL-self-en}}, and {{GFDL-self-with-disclaimers}}. What it should use is {{GFDL-user-en-with-disclaimers}}. Kelly 13:39, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
I've (hopefully) fixed all of these now, without breaking other things... Please check. --Magnus Manske 23:15, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Bot
Dear Magnus. I am really sorry to tell you I had to block your bot. There is no control of who is uploading copyvios using it and there are many. There are also software bugs wich allowes the bot to upload nsd images with no acteptable source. Please unblock it when you fixed at least the software mistakes. Regards and sorry again, abf /talk to me/ 18:36, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- I ask ABF to unblock the bot because CommonsHelper doesn't work correctly if bot is blocked.--Ahonc (talk) 19:23, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
I unfortunately have blocked the bot for the moment, see Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Blocks_&_protections#Block_request_for_User:File_Upload_Bot_.28Magnus_Manske.29 -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:57, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Hallo Magnus! Chaddy 16:00, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

CommonsHelper
Hi Magnus Manske, I often use CommonsHelper. At the moment it generates an error message: "Notice: Undefined variable: directupload in /home/magnus/public_html/commonshelper.php on line 965". However anything seems to work fine. I don't think it's a mayor error, so just do anything or nothing with this notification. GijsvdL 06:58, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'm currently rewriting parts of it and have enabled minor error messages to be displayed for debugging. Thanks for the notification, but no need for concern :-) --Magnus Manske 08:06, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Is direct uploading supposed to work at the moment? It does not work. CommonsHelper shows the new description page, but without anything below (like 'Add NowCommons'-button) and without real uploading. GijsvdL 23:38, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Same here, and I did the TUSC verification. I'm using FireFox. Kelly 23:43, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- UGH! I accidentially turned on testing mode for everyone. Sorry about that, I tried and it works fine now. --Magnus Manske 11:18, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Difficulty with FIST
Hello, I need to add a photo from Flickr but your tool is asking for a new "TUS password." I have tried and tried and tried and tried, yet it doesn't work, and the page doesn't explain how I get the new password. I have a token (which is very long) but no password. Can you please help? If you could reply at User talk:Badagnani at en:WP I would be very appreciative. I assume I'm not the only user experiencing this difficulty, so if you could alter the text to make it very, very, very clear how to get the password, it would be greatly appreciated. Badagnani 02:37, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
This is getting very, very frustrating. Why did you not add a clear explanation about how to put in the password? I have tried my Wikipedia password, and also the very long, complicated password and nothing works. I have work to do and want to do it. I assume dozens, if not hundreds of other editors are having this trouble, and many may be giving up, unlike myself, who is persistent. Is that what you want? You added a post to my talk page saying "should work now if you enter username/password in FIST." But that's very unclear, and I had asked earlier that you add a very clear explanation of how to put the password in, on the actual upload page itself. Badagnani 06:37, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
The password is still not working. Can you please add a very clear description of how to find and put in the password? Many thanks, Badagnani 00:58, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Author vs author
Hi Magnus, your bot now seems to add <nowiki{{Self|Author</nowiki> in stead of <nowiki{{Self|author</nowiki> (example) this breaks the self template. Can you change this? Multichill 08:52, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

TUSC problem - flickr2commons
Hi Magnus, I registered a TUSC login to use your flickr2commons bot. For some reason, the verification fails. I've maybe incorrectly registered the password I wanted to use, or your bot has a bug. Could you delete my account 'PurpleHz', so I can register again and tell you if your bot is responsible ?
I also met an other problem. This bot has a feature to forbid the upload of the same image by scanning flick's urls on commons, but it scans user's talk pages too, which is incorrect. I had to edit this IP talk page to be able to make your bot going further (well, not that further, see above :o).
I didn't use the jira system to report the problems, way too complicated :) Regards, PurpleHz 00:25, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- It's nuked. New game, new luck :-) Note that in order to upload files to Commons, you need to specify your Commons account, not the fr.wikipedia one. --Magnus Manske 09:10, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- Same player shoot again...It works ! Awesome ! Thanks you ! What about the url scanning feature ? Regards, PurpleHz 13:18, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Heads up
Please comment at MediaWiki talk:Gadget-Check-usage.js#Code has an uncaught exception problem. Thanks, giggy (:O) 02:22, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Bugs
CommonsHelper seems not to be transferring the "other versions" part of the {{Information}} template - an example I ran into was Image:WikiProjectAmericanOpenWheelRacingPicJune2007.jpg. Kelly 19:46, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- This should be fixed now, at least for en.wp - I'll get to the others soon. --Magnus Manske 22:55, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- Another minor bug - the en Wikipedia template {{Self2}} is now correctly converting to {{Self}} here, but the author information is not being included in the template. Kelly 00:39, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- And another (sorry to be such a pain) - the en template {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} is translating here into two templates - both {{GFDL-user-en-no-disclaimers}} and {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}}. We only need the first one. Kelly 15:58, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
- Gah - sorry, another one. When the en template {{GFDL-self-with-disclaimers}} is transferred, it's making a straight copy and not including the author information. It should translate into {{GFDL-user-en-with-disclaimers}} with the en username included. Kelly 16:13, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
- Should all work now. --Magnus Manske 19:09, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, it looks like the author information is still not being included when the {{Self2}} template transfers. Kelly 01:29, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Deprecated templates
Hello, Magnus! First, a little big thank you for your work on the CommonsHelper and File Upload Bot, I highly appreciate it. :-)
On the occasion of Image:Clock outside the Pavilion at the Oval.JPG I would like to focus your attention on the deprecated templates here, in EN WP and elsewhere, in particular the generic Template:PD. Maybe you should restrict the transfer of images tagged with PD, because this would also mean the transfer of the locally unsolved problems they have... All the best! →Spiritia 07:35, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, please (see also the section #Suggestion above. I would also include {{PD-Russia}} in this, it has been deprecated at en Wikipedia as well. Kelly 14:31, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Both done. --Magnus Manske 15:01, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
TUSC out of service?
Hi Magnus Manske, at the moment I get the following message while trying to transfer from NL.wikipedia: "Your TUSC verification was not successful. Aborting.". There seems to be something broken. GijsvdL 10:53, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- OK, apparently if I mistype the password the first time I try to login, I can no longer login at all ("Your TUSC verification was not successful. Aborting."), even when I type in the correct password. This is a problem. Patstuart (talk) 16:22, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- PS: Could I ask for a very minor feature? The first letter of the username be automatically capitalized, as is done on Wikimedia projects (see Image:Time-magazine-woodwin.jpg). Patstuart (talk) 16:24, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- If it doesn't work for you, can you try to log in here and tell me what it says? (I've fixed the capitalization issue, btw). --Magnus Manske 21:56, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Adolphe_Nourrit.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Adolphe_Nourrit.jpg.
Thank you. Image deletion warning | Image:Ludwig thoma karl klimsch1909.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. |

CommonsHelper Request
Howdy. I hate to post this on your talk page since you have a specific request about posting to JIRA - but apparently JIRA is dead? So I hope you don't mind. Regardless, a de:User:ChrisiPK from DE.WP came to me today and asked me if it was possible to prevent the CommonsHelper bot from transferring images from DE.WP to Commons based on templates on the DE.WP image page. Specifically they cited most of the templates from this category as they tend to match up with Commons own NLD/NSD/NPD, etc. Thanks. --ShakataGaNai Talk 19:51, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
- Mainly, the following templates mark images that lack sufficient licensing information:
- de:Template:DÜP (redirect, but used quite often)
- de:Template:Dateiüberprüfung
- de:Template:Dateiüberprüfung/benachrichtigt
- de:Template:Dateiüberprüfung/benachrichtigt (Kategorie)
- de:Template:Dateiüberprüfung/benachrichtigt (Text)
- de:Template:Dateiüberprüfung/benachrichtigt (Vermerk)
- There is another template (de:Template:NoCommons), which is often included by licensing templates, marking images that can probably only be used under the German copyright and need in any case review before they can be uploaded to Commons and should thus not be uploaded by a bot. Please note: This template normally does not appear in the wiki source of the description page as it is only included by other templates.
- If you have any questions about this, feel free to contact me on my talk page on the German Wikipedia as I do not look for new messages on Commons so frequently. Thanks, --ChrisiPK (talk) 20:00, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Ich kriege jedesmal die Fehlermeldung No token found in database!. Liegt das vielleicht an meinem Benutzernamen (wegen des Apostrophs)? Ich hoffe, Du kannst mir da weiterhelfen. Gruß -- Ra'ike T C 08:51, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
TUSC passwords
Is there a way to change the password for this? Perhaps just performing an authentication edit again should allow you to set a new password? – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:08, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Please link images
Hello Magnus Manske/Archive 3!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. BotMultichill (talk) 12:52, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
