Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

I suggest you read the subject policy carefully. Note in particular, the third, fourth, and fifth paragraphs in Commons:De_minimis#An_example . The title of the image and the categories all point to the fact that the only reason you uploaded the image is the mural. This is true despite the several additional categories you added to distract from the main ones.

In fact, the mere fact that you uploaded the image again speaks to the mural being the only important thin there -- I can't imagine someone breaking our rules to re-upload an image of an ordinary city street, which is what you would have without the mural. .     Jim . . . Hi A1Cafel, looks like there are quite a few photographs by Kelvin Boyes / Press Eye that should not be here. See previous discussion in October 2019.

The following should be removed as well, but I don't know how to nominate multiple images at once for deletion: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=Kelvin+Boyes+%2F+Press+Eye Thank you! // sikander { talk } 🦖 03:39, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

From: Karen Bowman [3] Sent: 05 December 2019 09:45 To: Alex Saunders <alex@eastgatearts.com> Subject: Use of banner image

Dear Alex

I had a superb time at the Edinburgh PROCESSIONS for women’s suffrage centenary. It has led me to actively engaging in adding women suffragettes into the Wikipedia.

The Wikimedia Commons is challenging my right to use pictures of some of the banners we saw - I was careful to cut off people.

I have to defend this within the next week if possible!

I thought it a great way to share knowledge of the original fight and the freedoms that were won a hundred years ago to a wider audience, and to share my participation in the wonderfully creative women’s community in this PROCESSIONS event itself!

Can you confirm that you would licence the right for me to use my picture in this way - I had confirmation from ARTICHOKE that your team own the design though I also had originally thought a permission of all the PROCESSIONS participants to free-share images taken on the day (remember signing something in the application to join in)

Would you kindly indicate that if your organisations are the owner of such images and if so that they can be licensed under one of these types.

Duplicate tagging

You probably noticed I'm rollbacking some of your edits. You have been warned before to generally tag the newer upload as duplicate. Yet again, I see many of your duplicate taggings are for the older uploads. Pinging @Gbawden. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 16:39, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: Yet some may be mistagged (only a few), many of those are correctly tagged, please look at the time carefully before revert. --A1Cafel (talk) 16:41, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
You should look at the time before tagging. (or don't tag at all. or only tag your own uploads) You can't expect me to take a fine comb to this. I checked several, and the older file was tagged. In those cases, I rolled back all your duplicate tagging for that collection. You can undo that if the tagging was actually correct, but too many are not. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 16:44, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
This is becoming a bit annoying . A1Cafel, please start being more careful with your uploads. I don't understand how you upload a file then upload it again, creating a duplicate. Surely you know what you've uploaded? If you need help perhaps someone can create a bot for you. The duplicates just create work for others Gbawden (talk) 10:58, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi, kindly use VisualFileChange when tagging files for deletion under the same rationale. Certainly no one wants to have a talk page like this. Thank you. Minoraxtalk (formerly 大诺史) 14:30, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi A1Cafel, I've taken the liberty to revert your copyvio-tagging of this image, as 1) BMEIA = Bundesministerium ... and 2) Angelika Lauber is obviously either the regular or a contracted photographer of the BMEIA. The web is full of images with "BMEIA/Angelika Lauber" credit. BMEIA-Flickr-acccount is from 2012, so no doubt to question its credibility. IMO, this case is different from the other tagged images, credited to photonews.at/Georges Schneider, as these have a statement in their EXIF data which indeed seems to contradict their Flickr-licensing. I have directly contacted the Flickr-account BMEIA and asked for clarification; therefore, I've collected all affected images in one DR Commons:Deletion requests/File:AM Kneissl trifft türkischen AM Cavusoglu (39795020775).jpg. --Túrelio (talk) 08:10, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

For my files

@A1Cafel: I see that you nominated several of my files to be deleted. Please, assume good faith. Why would you put the statement "Small image without EXIF, unlikely to be own work" on it? Sometimes I used my old phone to photograph things (forgot to bring my good one). And I sent it to my Whatsapp on my newer phone. Hence there was no EXIF data on it.--Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 15:18, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

For this one. This is a budget for a village in Indonesia. This information thus should be disseminated to the villagers in order for them to know the allocation for their taxes. This should used PD-ID-Gov for the information, and CC-BY-SA-4.0 for the picture.

Various Files nominated for deletion

You have nominated numerous photographs that I have posted for deletion. These are photographs of artwork from the Philadelphia Museum of Art (they are medieval works, and are not themselves under copyright); others are features of my place of worship, Church of the Good Shepherd (Rosemont, Pennsylvania). As to the Philadelphia Museum, I have inquired whether it is permissible from the Museum's view that these be posted on Wikipedia. As to the Church, I am at a loss as to what you consider to be necessary. Each of the photographs both from the Museum and the Church were taken personally by me with my cell phone, and then uploaded from my phone to my facebook page, and thence to Wikipedia. I have more than 1,000 revisions or other entries of various kinds on Wikipedia and have never before had images nominated for deletion. I should mention that I have been a lawyer in the US for many years and are very sensitive to copyright issues. If I truly have misunderstood the license system required by Wikipedia, then I wish to get it right. Thanks. Scribley (talk) 01:47, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Scribley: I believe you. It's just that we are extremely wary of any files that originate from Facebook. A lot of people upload images they randomly found on Facebook that they didn't take themselves. We also have the general rule (COM:NETCOPYVIO) that permission should be obtained for anything that was published elsewhere prior to being uploaded here.
There are a few things you could do:
  • Contact OTRS.
  • Upload the original files from your phone, assuming you still have them. You could transfer the photos from your phone to a laptop, or try to upload from the phone directly. Commons:Mobile app might help if you have an Android device. We'd also get much better quality this way!
  • Link your Wikipedia profile on your Facebook account, and give us a link to your Facebook account.
Any of these options should remove all doubt. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:12, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments Alexis. I will follow your suggestions for future postings of images I take, and avoid Facebook altogether. Cheers. Scribley (talk) 23:05, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi, you've nominated two of my photos for deletion - these were taken by my partner when we were both out taking photos of these buses on their last day of service. I have similar photos from my camera, but hers were better, so I picked them. Of course she's ok with me posting them, she doesn't have a Wiki account, so how do I make this "official", are you suggestion I get her to email you? I honestly don't know what the fuss is about, they're just photos of buses in a public place! Pseudopanax (talk) 23:02, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:2017 - Portrait Of Kim Jong-un (37549949744).png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:2017 - Portrait Of Kim Jong-un (37549949744).png]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

@AndyHung1979: 此圖顯示出一仍受著作權保護的藝術品,屬於Commons:衍生作品,您需要透過OTRS取得著作權持有人的許可,才能上傳照片。--A1Cafel (talk) 16:00, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by AndyHung1979 (talk • contribs) 16:12, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Editorial Cartoons

you've been nominating most of my artwork and cartoons for deletion. you're insinuating I would have used derivative works of something else or other sources. most of the files, you're listing in this relation are just my own work, based on my own ideas and not using any other sources. so, please, stop insinuating such stuff - without any circumstantial evidence or proves! If I use national flags or seals or logos of organisations, which are in public interest, discourse or criticism, these are necessary for identification or recognition. thank you!

CDS F10

You need to be more careful about this. -- Tuválkin 13:25, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi,

I am concerned by your use of speedy deletions for old uploads which were correctly verified. This is alarming as it is a constant risk for this project that volunteer time is eaten up handling challenges for files successfully hosted for many years and for which the sourcing may now be dead links, something that eventually happens for all uploads with external references.

Please take extra care, and do not raise older files for speedy unless you are certain they are copyvios or for other verifiable issues. Thanks -- ([[User talk:Fæ|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 08:07, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

I have to say the same thing and more. Your shotgun approach to speedy deletion is amateurish, careless and a deservice to other people time and work. Just from your speedy deletion from today, you claimed that File:John Alden Milne.jpg had no source and yet a 20 second search on its history would have shown the vandalism. Yesterday was even worst. From files in use in userpages and in scope, to images taken by WMF workers, to images of an Playboy Playmate cleared by OTRS, to image 1 and image 2 (reuploaded by me) of persons that have articles in different Wikipedias.
Just by the sample of your actions today and yestarday and almost destruction (several were undeleted after i approached the deleting administrator), i have to ask what more have you destroyed with your careless actions? And be warned that if i see any more of this careless handling of speedy deletions, at any time from here to eternity, i will take your actions to the proper board(s), as decisive action is not the same as lightning action in that results be damned. Tm ([[User talk:Tm|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 10:13, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Tagging File:Jennifer-Kehoe-Menna Fitzpatrick--2018 0226 211324 001.jpg as eligible for CSD F10 is reckless. Are you even looking at the file's description before tagging? pandakekok9 09:05, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Template:Ping, reviewing the cases raised by others, it seems very reasonable that you should cease all speedy deletion tagging unless you can respond here with a credible commitment that you have changed your approach. If you fail to respond, this is damaging enough to need a request at COM:ANU to force you to cease speedy tagging. Sorry, but the damage is real and the disruption is wasting a lot of valuable time from your collegiate volunteers. -- ([[User talk:Fæ|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 09:13, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
