Subtractive Color

Excellent work on this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Subtractive_color_mixing.jpg . Do you have an svg version that you could share? Daviddoria (talk) 13:55, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the credit, but I had nothing to do with creating this. Check the "Author" row. --Magnus Manske (talk) 17:05, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
I see. I saw "File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske)" and I guess I thought that mean you had uploaded it. Sorry for the confusion. 18:26, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Magnus,

UTF8-Problem with Flickr2Commons

Magnus, there still seems to be some strange UTF8 problem. See for instance File:Tarisa Wattanakes.jpg: somehow, all the Thai characters got replaced by question marks. Flinfo does return them properly; the response comes with header "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8". Another example where things go wrong is File:Houzuki-ichi-at-Sensoji.jpg; corresponding Flinfo output: All the Japanese characters got garbled. Is that content-type header correct? If so, it seems that there's a bug in flickr2commons.php. From a glance through the code, I just noticed that it does a utf8_decode on the description before writing it to the temp file for upload.pl, whereas commonshelper2.php doesn't do so. Maybe that has got something to do with it. Lupo 07:19, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Seems you're right. Let's hope there wasn't a good reason to keep that in ;-) --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:52, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Incorrect template of license

File Upload Bot: "I, the copyright holder of this work…" (example). NBS (talk) 20:44, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

"I" obviously refers to the copyright holder. It does not mention the uploader. Look in the author field of the template for - guess what - the author, who is likely to be the copyright holder. I, the author of this reply, don't see a problem here. --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:30, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Commons Commander deletes part of image description

Hi Magnus, I've been using Commons Commander to fix a number of redlink categories, it's very helpful. I came across an issue trying to move 14 files from Category:Plaques in Berlin-Spandau to Category:Plaques in Bezirk Spandau, here is one of the diffs:[2]. For this group the old category wasn't removed, so I ran it a second time[3], but it didn't help. Benchill (talk) 10:42, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

It fails if there is a sortkey. For simple renames, please use SieBot.  Docu  at 10:49, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. Benchill (talk) 10:52, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

--Martin H. (talk) 23:31, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

problem

Hi. You transferred some of my uploads to wiki commons. But, one is problematic, which I did not ask to be moved, unlike others. This one, [4] , should be removed. The replacement, more correct version, has already been uploaded. It is right here, [5]. So, please remove this worse version. (Lilic (talk) 02:44, 18 July 2010 (UTC)).

bug in upload bot

The bot normally changes the file name (by adding a suffix) when the name of the new file is already in use on commons. But the bot also removes the apostrophe, and does not seem to be aware that the name of the file has changed. See File:Nestor notabilis -Arthurs Pass, South Island, New Zealand-8.jpg which was uploaded as "File:Nestor notabilis -Arthur's Pass, South Island, New Zealand-8.jpg", until the bot automatically removed the apostrophe. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:26, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

On this occasion the bot uploaded two files in succession to the same file name without apparent reason. The bot usually advances the suffix counter by one. See File:Trigonoceps occipitalis -Las Aguilas Jungle Park, Tenerife, Spain-8a (1).jpg. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:51, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

TUSC vs. SUL

Danke! --Saibo (Δ) 14:24, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

--Magnus Manske (talk) 10:07, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello, Magnus Manske!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Internet Archive uploader?

Hi! I am an admin at the English Wikisource, and we frequently upload texts from the Internet Archive to Commons to use as the basis of our work. The download from IA/upload to Commons cycle is extremely tedious, especially when doing a multi-volume work (and we have many of those), and it is not unknown for users with slower connections to be totally unable to upload larger files. I was wondering if you could modify the Flickr uploading bot to take an IA URL (should be a DJVU file) and transfer "sideways" from IA to Commons to avoid this process?

If possible, this tool would be hugely useful to the Wikisource project. An example of the kind of file we will be moving is this one, which is one of 16 volumes. If this isn't possible for some reason, then don't worry about it.

Thanks for your consideration, Inductiveload (talk) 03:37, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

It's entirely possible. Does IA have a decent API for me to get metadata to fill into the Information template, or would that be done manually? Also, should there be a "group function" (all 16 volumes), or single-file only? --Magnus Manske (talk) 12:43, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Anyway, here goes... --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:22, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Wow! That's fantastic: exactly what I had in mind. The $DESCRIPTOR$ field is a great idea, and multiple uploads is also very helpful. Thank you so much, you are be the hero of Wikisource! Inductiveload (talk) 03:30, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Hallo Magnus. Ich erhalte nur "Your (Saibo) TUSC verification was not successful. Aborting."

Was wird bevorzugt? --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:06, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
--Magnus Manske (talk) 14:13, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Biodiversity Photo

Hello Mr, My name is Rita Neves. I work in Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, that is a Public Organism in Portugal. Actually, we are working on a road book of Biodiversity of Lisbon, for which we are going to produce a panel and a brochure. We found your photos on Wikimedia Commons and liked specially one of them very much, so we would like to know if you could allow us to use your photos, for free, to publish on this project, knowing that the brochure of will be for free distribution to everyone. The photo we are considering to use are the following:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carduelis_chloris_1.jpg

The brochure will have four brackets. - Broochura a pocket to take the route - A brochure to present the day of inauguration

- Schedules for species identification
- Panels that will be fixed in the Land

As i said the Free Access will be everything :)

If you are the author and provide us that photo, we will refer your name in the bibliografy and we need to know what´s the name you want on the bibliography? Olivier ? If it´s possible please respond to ritasoraia2001@hotmail.com or rita.neves@cm-lisboa.pt or here on Wikimedia.

Thank you very much. Our best regards

Hello, Magnus. I am writing about the operation of your bot. Commonshelper2

Hello, I seem to have a problem with this tool. Unfortunately, even if I specify a target filename that is different from the local filename on the source project, it ultimately gets overridden. Recent example: this file. And now, I can't even reupload the file with a different filename, because it's automatically detected as a dupe... Well, since this tool is very useful, I hope you'll be able to fix this issue. Thanks! --MAURILBERT (discuter) 14:38, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Hello again. I just tried to reproduce the problem with another upload, and actually your tool might as well not be at fault at all. I don't have a TUSC account, so I just download the file on my computer and reupload it. I noticed that the upload form is conveniently pre-filled by your tool (with the target name I specified in the previous steps), but as soon as I select the file to be uploaded, its name (on the source project and thus on my computer) overrides the pre-filled destination filename. I now know that I must either rename the file locally (on my computer) or fill the destination filename field after I selected the source filename. It is not expected behavior, but it is not a bug on your side either, apparently. Thanks again for your attention! --MAURILBERT (discuter) 15:17, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

CatScan2 timeouts

Hi, I am a frequent user of your CatScan2 tool often to intersect some large categories/templates to find files with problematic licenses or some other issues. The alternative approach of using AutoWikiBrowser "list comparer" which has similar capabilities is often hard to use when lists have more than 100k files. The problem I have with CatScan2 is that it often times out without returning anything, and I might try it dozen of times before getting any results. Is there any way to avoid such timeouts. For example now I am trying to intersect category:PD Old and files which have {{Works of authors who died more than 100 years ago}} tag to find images which can be upgraded to {{PD-old-100}}. --Jarekt (talk) 16:20, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

The problem is that the template links are not indexed on the toolserver. That means that even a handcrafted SQL query takes several minutes to complete with such large categories/template inclusions. Because CatScan2 is much more generic, the queries are hard/impossible to optimize automatically. I don't see a way around that ATM. But, I have manually created a snapshot list for the example you gave, here. --Magnus Manske (talk) 18:37, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks I am away for a week but I will use it once I am back. --Jarekt (talk) 02:55, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

I was hunting for some info on a Crassula species when I came across your photo at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crassula_perforata_%27string_of_buttons%27_2007-06-02.jpg#metadata - this plant is actually Cotyledon tomentosa supbsp. tomentosa. I have changed the summary text but I think the file name need to change as well, and the file location is obviously no longer "Unidentified Crassula" ! I am not sure how to do these changes as I am a complete novice at Wiki editing so I am leaving it up to you to fix the rest of it. Thankyou.

Thanks, fixed! Now at File:Cotyledon tomentosa subsp. tomentosa 2007-06-02.jpg. --Magnus Manske (talk) 15:43, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Hello Magnus! Viel Gruess! Somehow a message came thru to my discussion page on Wikimedia Commons telling me I had a TUSC account. Where can I find out what that means? Why do I have a TUSC token, and how do I use it? Why was it on my talk page? I took it off again.

I think I may be missing out on something useful, but I gave up on the 'install' process when I found I had to enter a password, and became suspicious. --Jack Greenmaven (talk) 01:17, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

This is strange, indeed. For information on TUSC see here or here if you understand German. --Leyo 08:34, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
If you gave up when being requested for a fresh, new password (not any of your existing passwords!) for your new TUSC account you already did the previous step (confirmation edit). However it was done using your IP which would not have worked even if you had completed the process. You need to me logged in to Commons before starting the TUSC account creation.
Maybe this awful, in parts erroneous automatic translation of :de:WP:TUSC is of some help if you do not understand the German page Leyo pointed to. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:13, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

BaGLAMa stats tool

Hi Magnus,

I was at the GLAM WIKI conference at the BM and came to your talk about stats tools, which was really great. You mentioned a tool called BaGLAMa to extract views, but I can't seem to find it on your tools page or elsewhere. Sorry if it should be easy to find, but do you think you could let me have the link?

Hi Magnus,
as of recently there have been quite some uploads through "File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske)" of copyvios which had a totally empty description page except this "{{ Blacklisted Flickr user)", such as for example File:Emma Watson as Pauline.jpg. With this little information we cannot target the initiating user. Any idea? --Túrelio (talk) 17:31, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Small request for CommonsHelper

Hi Magnus, I have a couple small requests that would make CommonsHelper easier to use for newbies. First of all since Commons no longer accepts anonymous transfers, could you remove or grey out the box allowing "Directly upload file"? This has confused several people. Also, could you please provide a convenience link to the Commons basic upload form if you don't already? Thank you! Dcoetzee (talk) 13:17, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Anonymous transfers were disabled quite some time ago. I do not know what you exactly mean. Are you familiar with TUSC? --Leyo 14:14, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I think I have a misunderstanding. A friend tried to use the checkbox labelled "Directly upload file (using commons user name 'File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske)')" and only received a timeout (blank white page). As far as I know they entered their TUSC information correctly. I assumed this was a well-known problem of indefinite duration but it may have been an isolated failure. Dcoetzee (talk) 23:01, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
This timeout happens to be as well, but only occasionally. If I go back and do the transfer again, 99.9% of the time, it works. --Sreejith K (talk) 03:00, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

--TMg 22:50, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Greetings- questions- but no complaints!

Hi, have not yet never met. I (mostly) edit the en.Wikipedia, but when I began covering the biographies of musicians a few years ago-- almost exclusively, I found most of the articles sadly missing photos-- on an encyclopedia?!! Since that time, I've by default become something like both an editor, but also the "Wiki Photo Fairy", hunting photos, mostly on Flickr; I'm told I've uploaded (and placed) about 1,200 - 1,500, more than any other Wikipedian with the possible excepion of yourself. You may see the link to my amazing list that has grown so huge from first seeing my userpage in en.Wikipedia from here first: [htp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Leahtwosaints#user page in en.wikipedia with a special page listing almost all of them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Leahtwosaints/Leahtwosaints/#list_of_uploaded_musician%27s_photos] So, to the reason I've written you-- initially I used one of your bots to upload photos and it worked so beautifully. However, at some point it quit working for me and another editor advised me to upload everything manually. Of course the photo quality suffered in those cases, since I had to download the photos from Flickr to my computer and then upload them.

Here's the thing: I'm a middle aged woman who knows next to nothing about using computers, and the like. I am hoping you can tell me if you know of a Flickr upload bot to directly upload those photos with the resulting better quality that results. I've veiwed Commons as just a mecessary evil to upload photos just because I really don't have the slightest idea of what they are doing here. I just upload them, add a Category or two, and that's the extent of the whole thing which is why my userpage in Wikimedia Commons stinks- just a lot of crical remarks, as opposed to the one in the en.wikipeia. Please let me know if you know of an upload bit to Commons that might help me? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 18:54, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Norton

Hi Magnus,

Good news to hear that you are working on the tool again. I gave it a try, here a couple of points I noticed:

  • It seems to fit in nicely in the Mediawiki interface
  • It's possible to add the same category several times with the tool (sample)
Fixed.
  • Moving has some problems (sample)
Fixed.
It still happens (sample).
  • Somehow I miss the search feature
To come :-)
  • There seems to be less space for thumbnails compared to the earlier version (especially since I tended to use just one pane)
One pane to come. Should I hide the Commons sidebar by default? That would give more room, but break the "nice fit".
I'd keep the sidebar.

Cat-a-lot has some js code that works fine for moving and adding categories. --  Docu  at 07:45, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

I know, I wrote it :-) So I should support more functionality in Commander. Did you see the revamped right-click menu? --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:06, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
.. cool. I still have to get used to it, but it's nice how one can navigate one pane by selecting thumbs in the other. --  Docu  at 11:16, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Bot file moving

Hi Magnus, would it be theoretically possible to use some of your tools for moving applicable files (regarding the license and topic) from WikiSkripta.eu to Wikimedia Commons? I am asking just theoretically, since there is no clear consensus among the administrators of WikiSkripta whether the moving would have more pros or cons. Thanks, --Petrus Adamus (talk) 19:25, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

I do not think that any of my tools could move files from a non-wikimedia site; however, I believe one of them could be adapted relatively quickly, once there is consensus. --Magnus Manske (talk) 12:43, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Glamorous

Hi Magnus,

  1. Glamorous on Ship categories with missing year currently counts 745 images, but doesn't indicate any image uses.
  2. CatScan2 on the same lists 745 images, including File:North Pacific (sidewheeler).jpg from Category:North Pacific (sidewheeler).
  3. That image is used in en:North Pacific (sidewheeler). An image use that Glamorous would normally note.

The addition of Category:North Pacific (sidewheeler) to Category:Ship categories with missing year is fairly recent, but it is detected as the image is included in the count of 745.

I'm trying to find used images to get the missing years from corresponding Wikipedia articles and was wondering why Glamorous doesn't detect them. Maybe you can help me. --  Docu  at 04:35, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Looks like uses counted are only those of images in the category itself, not in subcategories. In the above sample, Category:Ship categories with missing year have no images. --  Docu  at 16:11, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Logs for flickr uploads from bot?

Does your bot keep verifiable logs/screenshots/any such thing of images that it uploads from flickr? A user is claiming at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Cynomys ludovicianus -Paignton Zoo, Devon, England-8a.jpg that his flickr image never was under a CC license. This sounds extremely dubious since both your bot and the user who requested the upload (who is a long time user) say that it was under a CC license. But I thought I would check to see if any records are available. Thanks. --UserB (talk) 21:33, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Bug: Author field is not set correctly

Hi Magnus. Thanks for doing great work with Wikipedia Commons API.

Aha - perhaps DAB-17 is relevant, although the user name doesn't contain a space. --Trevj (talk) 14:05, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

I've just looked into the source of the Tool, seems it relies on scraping the content from our pages (I'm a developer on Geograph), in some cases, the content wont match what the tool expects. Just correct the upload, but Magnus will need correct the tool to stop it happening in the future. Personally would recommend using the API rather than scraping webpages, which is prone to error. Sorry to bother you, but I forgot my TUSC password. How can I retrieve it? Many thanks. SMasters (talk) 10:47, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

You can't. Noone can, that's a safety feature :-) But, I have deleted your TUSC logins entirely, so you can create a new one. Note that for working with TUSC on Commons, you need a Commons TUSC registration (no SUL, sorry). --Magnus Manske (talk) 22:51, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh I see, maybe that's why my password didn't work. OK, I will try again. Thanks. SMasters (talk) 01:11, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Schmetterlinge

Images from UK National Archives

Can you avoid uploading material from the UK National Archives Flickr account for the time being? It looks like someone's got a bit carried away with the government's new-found enthusiasm for open data, and ended up being very sloppy with their licence tagging. They've effectively tagged it as all PD regardless of whether its copyright-expired, subject to the Open Government Licence, or just their copy of something that is someone else's copyright - it's a real mess. However, there's now a formal collaboration between TNA and Wiki, so hopefully we can get the material direct, with proper licencing. I can see there could be a requirement for someone used to uploading lots of images to Commons.... :-) I've given some examples of "problem" Flickr images over at en:Wikipedia talk:GLAM/TNA#Licencing. File:Propane.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Map Change

Was it you that uploaded the ACC map? Can anyone make a change to the map and make it simpler and easy to Understand. I recommend making it similar to the Big Ten's map on wikipedia. All one color for the states that have ACC teams. Then use three different color dots where the actual universities are located. One color signifying the "Atlantic Division" and one color signifying the "Coastal Division" and a third for Pittsburgh and Syracuse signifying "To Be Determined". I don't know how much work this is but who ever has done the other conferences does a great job (I just wish the ACC map was easier to read. I hope this helps.--Craiglduncan (talk) 16:04, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

I do not have the faintest idea what you are talking about. --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:59, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Flickr stream tool

Hi Magnus. Is it possible with your Flick stream tool to upload in batches? As far as I can tell, when you ask for X images only, it starts from the beginning each time, duplicating what's already been uploaded (ie first 10, first 10 etc), but if you try to upload in one go, it has little chance of success for relatively large streams given how long it can take (it was only managing 3-5 images a minute when I tried it). CatScan 2

It currently gives an access denied-MYSQL error. If you have time to look into it, I'd be glad. --  Docu  at 06:31, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
