🎉 HAPPY #20 BIRTHDAY WIKIMEDIA COMMONS & COMMUNITY !

[edit]

It is 20th Birthday of Wikimedia COMMONS and I am failing to see enthusiasm in Wikimedia over that...maybe it is the adulthood that is going to be more joyfull then teen years? What are you doing today to celebrate Commons:Birthday? (me starting this page in hope we can comemorate with something informative and inspirational) --Zblace (talk) 06:19, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hoorray! Let's hope Commons will be healthy as never before the next 20 years and beyond :3 --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 10:35, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Happy 20th birthday Wikimedia Commons! More birthdays to come! 🎊🎉 JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 13:15, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yay, on to the next decade! To answer the question, it was totally not a coincidence that today I made my 100 k edit here (partly about the notifications contributors receive when making 10n edits).
I think there should be much more outreach-type efforts at such days that use this opportunity. For example, the Commons app needs lots of more devs (for example to make searching cats possible again, enable audio & video, and build a proper Home feed) and Google + DuckDuckGo are still not really indexing files and category pages on Commons (you can't even find videos here when searching for the title 1:1!). For the latter, something like an open letter (similar to this recent one) and press outreach could be done, e.g. at least mentioning this issue when there is some reporting about WMC. The external world would probably also be interested somewhat in development of an increasingly relevant proper audio player for mainly spoken Wikipedia articles, short well-made videos presenting this site on YouTube, and other useful or standard things. New interesting charts that show more than growth of the number of files would be neat as well. Recurrent events as well as public/media attention opportunities should be used. <3 @Prototyperspective that is very good and insightful single-paragraph overview. I can add that not having an official COMMONS iPhone app (or even subsidised development and maintainance for the non-official one) cuts us of from huge amount of contributors who have excellent media recording devices (while we serve Wikipedia app and develop other software to work on MS Windows, so the argument of 'freedom' is really abused IMHO). Thank you for pointing out to Commons advocacy work done with the open letter! I would love to see this also be a starting point to re-imagine different models of development and governance, rather then just waiting for WMF. Zblace (talk) 10:13, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Joyeux anniversaire Wikimedia Commons et la communauté ! ✨
To mark the event, I'd like to share this video that reminds me of our movement.
And as the page lacks images, I'll plant virtually a tree (but in real life, a smaller one for successful planting :) Korg (talk) 22:55, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
