KNXV-TV (channel 15) is a television station affiliated with the ABC network in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, and owned by the E. W. Scripps Company. The station launched on September 9, 1979, as an independent station with evening pay subscription television service from ON TV. It was acquired by Scripps in 1985 and served as Phoenix's first affiliate of the then-new Fox network in 1986, becoming one of its strongest affiliates nationally. A multi-market affiliation realignment caused the station to switch from Fox to ABC between 1994 and 1995, in spite of the latter network's reluctance, as part of a deal between ABC and Scripps. During this time, KNXV-TV launched local newscasts, which met with early success before a downturn in the late 1990s and early 2000s; the news department has since recovered, winning a total of three George Foster Peabody Awards. In 2019, Scripps acquired a second Phoenix station, KASW. (Full article...)

There are 37 populated places officially granted city status in Luhansk Oblast, the easternmost region of Ukraine. Settlements with more than 10,000 people are eligible to become cities, although the status is also typically given by the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, to settlements of historical or regional importance. According to the 2001 Ukrainian census, the most populous city in the oblast was the regional capital Luhansk (pictured), with a population of 463,097, while the least populous city was Almazna, with 5,061. Following the Donbas war in 2014, 25 of the oblast's cities were occupied by pro-Russian separatists. After the enactment of decommunization laws across the country, nine cities in separatist-occupied territory were de jure given new names in 2016 which were unrecognized by de facto pro-Russian officials in the cities. Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops have occupied all cities in the oblast since the end of the battle of Lysychansk in 2022. (Full list...)

Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962) was an American model and actress. One of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s, she played stereotypically "dumb blonde" characters that were emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. After beginning her career as a pin-up model, she had two short-lived film contracts before being signed by 20th Century-Fox in 1951. The next year, scandalous nude photographs of her were featured in a popular calendar. She became one of the most bankable Hollywood stars with starring roles in comedies such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), and The Seven Year Itch (1955). Disappointed in being typecast and underpaid, Monroe formed her own production company in 1955 and successfully fought for a better contract with Fox. She received critical acclaim for her performances in Bus Stop (1956) and Some Like It Hot (1959), winning a Golden Globe for Best Actress for the latter. Her last completed film was the drama The Misfits (1961). Troubled by mental health and addiction problems, Monroe died of a barbiturate overdose in 1962. She continues to be considered a popular culture icon. This Associated Press photograph of Monroe was taken on September 9, 1954, during the filming of The Seven Year Itch on the streets of New York. She is wearing her white dress, worn in the "skirt scene" in which air from a subway grate blows up her skirt. Photograph credit: Associated Press
