Guide to recover failed uploads from upload stash
[edit]- First, upload errors should be prevented. The chunked uploading must be used to upload files larger than 100MB. The last chunk should be uploaded with "async=1" in the API request, if your tool supports it. This will ensure file reassembly doesn't time out and cause errors. Don't try to do all things at once if you are uploading a huge file, namely, don't publish the file at the time you complete uploading. After a few minutes (for a 3.8GB file), you can continue to the following step.
- If the upload tool you use does't support "async=1" when uploading the last chunk, and recieved Key "15sj6r0dhpqs.cfdyo6.6539091.pdf" not found in stash. error, you can also continue, which is common for files around 1GB. For errors of type "Caught exception of type Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBQueryError", your file is nearly unrecoverable (common for files above 2GB).
- Go to Special:UploadStash to find out which file key correspond to a specific local file. The file key might change when the upload fails. The new file key must be used.
- If that page could load successfully, click on ⧼uploadstash-thumbnail⧽ to match stashed files to your failed upload files.
- If that page could not be load, go to Special:ApiSandbox, send a request with list=mystashedfiles&msfprop=size&msflimit=max. Then match file keys to your failed upload files based on file size in bytes.
- The file thumbnail URL format is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadStash/thumb/1a74yq8tb80c.puorq7.6539091.pdf/page1-220px-1a74yq8tb80c.puorq7.6539091.pdf.jpg where 1a74yq8tb80c.puorq7.6539091.pdf is the file key. Directly enter this URL in the browser to try to load the thumbnail to confirm. Sometimes thumbnail fail to create for a large file, in this case refresh the page.
